Picture of the Day: Shatner the Photobomber August 14, 2010

William Shatner has shown he is the master of TV, film, commercials, music, and now photobombing! Today’s photo of the day comes from last week’s Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas, where Bill bombed like the best of them.

Spot the Shatner

Can you spot Shatner sneaking into a photo of these fans?

Here is a photo from a moment later when the group realized they just got photobombed by The Shat.

The Shatner photobombing was captured by photographer Rachel McCauley who describes the scene:

I was taking a break from the Con and buying ice cream at one of the shops in the Hilton when everyone started cheering. I turned around and saw Shatner being followed by his camera crew as he walked the halls. I almost at first didn’t want to chase after him but I am glad I did.

He came upon this group of costumers that were posing for pictures and just creeped up behind them. It was hilarious. People started laughing when they realized who it was and then laughing even more because the costumers were slow to realize what was happening. Then the Shat just nonchalantly walked in front of them and then the costumers realized what was happening and we all shared in the laughter. It was awesome.

(Is that a lady Khan on far left?)

5. Jonboc - August 14, 2010

Too funny. Shatner rocks.

….cue the Shat bashers who will now chime in, livid about how, with his huge ego, he couldn’t stand to not be in the picture, thus ruining the fan’s photo op.

6. I'm Dead Jim! - August 14, 2010

11. zanzibar - August 14, 2010

That has to have been the high point of the Con. I’m sure the scheduled stuff was fun, but the spontaneous stuff like this is truly hilarious. Love those pictures. She got a seq that’ll live in infamy!

12. captain_neill - August 14, 2010

That’s Eric he does a great Data.

Damn I was there and there was a lot of cool things I missed.

13. Jerry Modene - August 14, 2010

I recognize the Borg girls; they were in the first row during the Guinness-record-setting event on Saturday. I was right behind them in the second row so I’m in the pic of them on startrek.com.

This is freakin Awesome, I love this man!

24. cd - August 14, 2010

Those pictures are perfect: Shatner’s half hidden face in the first one and the blur on the second one as the universe revolves around him! And the look on his face is priceless.

25. Kev-1 - August 14, 2010

That is brilliant. HIM sneaking into photos with THEM (US). Even if he’s filming it, this is fun. A drop of the hat to the Shat.

26. CmdrR - August 14, 2010

Khannie needs to be in the next picture.

Also, nice to see the 7 of 9 chick has her nano-probes on. Mmmmmmm.

27. TJ Trek - August 14, 2010

Apparently Dr. Soong had a brother, who decided to build an android too.

28. TJ Trek - August 14, 2010

The answer is yes

29. samrock83 - August 14, 2010

I photoshopped the Shat into a picture I submitted for my college yearbook.

I knew the editor so it made it in.

Now the Shat will forever be at that toga party senior year.

It’s the little things . . .

30. Dion1701 - August 14, 2010

SHAT ROCKS!!!!! He is so great!

31. British Naval Dude - August 14, 2010

I once saw me an image o’ Shatner in me breakfast toast…

I ate it anyways.

Oh, I kidz cuz I luvs. Merry old Bill… gotta’ luvs him.

32. gir6 - August 15, 2010

I was there! I couldn’t believe how long it took everyone to notice Bill standing there.

The best part of the Vegas con is the stars just walking through the crowds or hanging out, playing craps. If you stay up late enough after the crowds thin, you might end up hanging out in the bar with a few of them and debating the relative merits of Nemesis until 2:30am.

Shatner looks great, by the way and seems t be aging in reverse.

33. Kevin from Australia - August 15, 2010

I was there when that happened, stumbling with my camera trying to get a shot. He said during his stage time that he normally doesn’t do a walk thru. Special treat for those of us who were there

34. denny cranium - August 15, 2010

Quite possibly one of the coolest things that Bill has done.
Well done and what a great moment.

35. DAK23 - August 15, 2010

He’s always gonna be the heart of Star Trek! I love the impish look on his face, too! classic.

36. Buzz Cagney - August 15, 2010

Debating the relative merits of Nemesis till 2.30am, #32?! yikes, how drunk were you guys! lol

37. Buzz Cagney - August 15, 2010

Wouldn’t it have been great if nobody noticed- until they downloaded the pictures to their computer! ;-D

38. tony - August 15, 2010

i was there noticed the shat was more friendly than normal because he had his camera crew with him, when i got his autograph your usually lucky to get a hi or thank you but since the camera crew was there filming the autograph session he actually took the time to talk ive seen shat 7 times and this is the most freindly ive ever seen him

39. Tom - August 15, 2010

The fellow in the red Captain’s tunic is my cousin King. His wife Lori and daughter Michelle are the 7of 9 girls. We’re all getting a big laugh out of it.

40. Andy Patterson - August 15, 2010

Best joke and funnest site I’ve seen all day. What a cool thing to happen to them. Great story to tell. Love Shatner.

41. King - August 15, 2010

What a spontanious thing to happen to us. Lydia far left (yes a female Kahn), Lori (my wife & 7 of 9), Michelle (my daugher & mini 7 of 9), myself in a T.W.O.K. Monster Maroon uniform & our friend Eric who not only does a great Data, also Lore & has a wonderful Borg outfit. Shatner really seemed to enjoy photo bombing us and we will remember that for a long time. What a pleasent surprise, didn’t expect the Shat to sneak up on us. The picture after this was classic in our surprised looks. Thanks Bill & thanks Rachael McCauley for being a shutterbug and having the presents of mind to capture this!

42. Eric - August 15, 2010

That’s me as Data– the whole convention was great, but this was just icing on the cake :-)

43. Red Dead Ryan - August 15, 2010

Great job as Data, one of my favorite all-time characters!

44. Trek Nerd Central - August 16, 2010

Love it. Shatner’s got to be the most meta celebrity alive. Is anyone more aware of his own fame, and more adept at playing with it (and us)?

45. Trek Nerd Central - August 16, 2010

41 & 42, King & Eric: Nice costumes, guys! You rock the look.

46. Christopher Pike - August 16, 2010

A classic prank and at the same time, a genuinely nice thing to him to have done. :)

47. Frederick - August 16, 2010

Material for uniforms: $200
Convention tickets and hotels: $800
Bill Shatner photobombing your picture: priceless!

48. captain_neill - August 16, 2010

Im sure that was a great experience. I must have been in a photo op queue when this happened.

Awesome photo to be part off.

49. Lt. Bailey - August 16, 2010

Only Shatner could pull this off. This will be part of his documentery “Captains” or so he told the crowd when he was on stage.

50. VOODOO - August 18, 2010

Put Shatner in the new movie.

51. chrisfawkes.com - August 18, 2010

Love how Data has the spare head.

52. TMMW (formerly TrekMadeMeWonder) - August 18, 2010

That second pic should be titled “What it means to be Shatner.”
