Watch Chris Pine Talk Bad Star Trek Audition + His New Found Hollywood Power

We are just days away from Chris Pine’s big screen follow-up to Star Trek, playing opposite Denzel Washington in the action film Unstoppable. Chris was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night, where he talked a little Star Trek. Watch that below, plus more excerpts from Chris talking Trek in new interviews.

Pine on Leno – talks high school and Star Trek audition

While promoting Unstoppable on Jay Leno show last night Chris says that his his initial audition for Star Trek went "as poorly as you can get" and he thought he had no chance.

Pine talks about his new power

In a new interview with Reuters, Pine talks about how Star Trek made him a star, here is an excerpt:

Pine holds his own opposite the powerful Denzel Washington [in Unstoppable], but he knows he is still considered a newcomer when cast against a veteran. He also is aware that the opportunity to star in "Unstoppable" came his way because of "Star Trek."

"It’s a business, and the bottom line is money," Pine said, matter-of-factly, about Hollywood moviemaking. "’Star Trek’ made a lot of money for people, and I just happened to be part of an ensemble that made it work. I’m still riding the wave."

After wrapping "Star Trek," Pine took a year off "because I was so burned out." Not only was the four-month shoot physically grueling, also heaped on his shoulders was the stress of satisfying legions of "Star Trek" fans while still appealing to mass audiences.

Chris is also the subject of the cover story of this week’s Hollywood Reporter

Pine tells the mag that he is enjoying his post-Star Trek perks, telling THR "To have just a bit more power to say yes and no is very appealing and intoxicating,” Pine is looking to two specific A-list stars as models for his career:

I look at Clooney or Matt Damon. Hopefully, being in movies that are more commercially minded allows you to pick stuff that maybe won’t appeal to everybody but for whatever reason satisfies something in your soul that you need to say.

Go for it, Mr. Pine!

I have a lot of respect for Chris Pine. A lot of actors try to distance themselves from science fiction, even when it made them famous. But not Mr. Pine. He gives Star Trek’s success the credit it deserves. He embrases that that movie helped move he career forward. That being said, he is a great actor who deserves to be in the big leagues. I’m glad to see that he respects the franshise and the opportunities it has given him. He really seems like a good guy and I hope he continues to have success. Kudos Mr. Pine.

What is there to say? Chris is of course, so gorgeous and funny. I love his story about going out to “play scrabble” and how cool his mother was when he got home…

I really loved what he was wearing on the Jay Leno Show. He just looks so good in that suit, especially the shirt… sigh

I am glad Hollywood has embraced the new Captain Kirk and haven’t typecasted him like they did to the original Captain Kirk. Maybe Hollywood is a little more enlightened now.

I dont know if hollywood is more enlightened, but the movie made a hell of a lot of money in both box office and dvds and merchandise, it has shown that he has potential as a money maker

Okay. The training wheels are off. Kirk/Pine needs to buff up for the next movie. In XI, he seemed to get beaten up too many times. In spite of his brawn, his shirtless scene showed no muscularity or build that befits an A-list character. So, please, Mr. Pine, get a personal trainer and develop some bulk and a six pack for the next Trek.

6 – er Pine wasnt that far off season 1 Shatner in terms of build…only more toned

what you want an Arnie sized Kirk?

Seems like a smart actor. Clooney and Damon are excellent career role models for him to emulate.

I was actually thinking he should put on a little comfort fat. The Shat always had that great barrel chest and fat-softened features. Not that he was chubby in TOS, He just looked like a man in charge; the kind of guy who didn’t have to get up for his coffee.

Agreed. :) I’m still waiting for Damon to receive a much-overdo acting Oscar.

he’s still a d-bag.

Brando and DeNiro would be better role models. Now for nitpicking: New-found is usually written with a dash between them, not as separate words.

AWESOME blue eyes! … I also think its great that he respects the franchise … and he’s great in interviews … like I said before even when he talks nonsense! … I loved it!

Although some call it d-bag, wrongly of course! … LOL!…LOL!!!

I find it incredible how you can pay attention to clothes that CP’s using … and do not get me wrong I’m not criticizing you. … Is that I’m always watching the first in which CP is speaking, in his voice, mouth, movements of hands! … Well so long after I look the clothes! … and yes he looks great! ….LOL! ..:-)

Was that guy “yentas” whatever that means he was referring to us? HAHAHAHAH!

You’re the “d-bag”, a**hole!

The “Supreme Court” hit the nail on the head when they cast Chris Pine as Captain Kirk. He’s on a trajectory that will take him to the top of the A-list. And the guy continues to do stage acting!

George Clooney and Matt Damon are great actors. Classy as well. Mr. Pine chose his role models well!

@15: The troll; you are feeding him. ;)

Just gave him a good dose of his own medicine!

The fact that media audiences are more fragmented today helps reduce perception of typecasting, as does turning in iconic performances in different settings (see Harrison Ford vs most everybody else in Star Wars). Also, Star Trek is itself iconic at this point, so being in one is sort of like being in a James Bond movie, and does not necessarily turn you into a “science fiction actor” or a “spy movie actor”. Rather, you are an actor who got good, brand-name jobs.

14. Dee – I look at his face, his eyes, his hair, listen to what he is saying and how he is saying it, melt when he smiles… it is just so automatic and then he is wearing those great clothes which help complete the lovely Chris Pine ensemble. (I daren’t use “package” as that word has been used in another context, if you know what I mean).

Chris Pine does work out and very likely has a personal trainer. I do not think he needs to “beef up”. It would not suit him or necessarily be very healthy for his body type, which is longer, narrower, leaner. I think he is well toned. He has a different body shape from William Shatner. Shatner has a physique closer to that of a weight lifter whereas Pine has a physique closer to that of a dancer. Male dancers (ballet or other) can be the strongest and fittest of men, but have a more subtle, refined, beautiful muscle tone. Just love it!

Some of my friends have said that star trek 2009 was like ‘Saved by the Bell in space’. I thought that was harsh. However, looking at that clip, Pine looks and sounds very much like the guy who played Zack Morris (sp?). If that’s what they meant, they’re spot on, I think.

I thought Chris Pine was great in ST and more importantly he seems like a good guy.

Yes, about the “package” of course I know what you mean! … LOL! … Hair, blue eyes, nose, mouth, lips, tongue, arms, etc, etc ,….+ LOL! ….+ LOL!

And I agree “beef up” no way! … CP is Captain Kirk! … he’s not Captain America!

Lets see if he’s got the chops to be a real Captain Kirk in the next movie. He started well, but there is clearly still work to be done, given his relative youth.
The writers are going to have a big hand in the characters growth too.
I await, with excitement, the continuing journey…..

I predict Chris is going to have a long and successful career. He’s got the talent and dedication it takes, plus he’s genuine. Capt Fine is unstoppable!

He has a very similar speech pattern to Christian Slater.

Chris Pine is a class act he’s so great and sexy too he does have the whole package:)

All I ask is that you make us proud of you MR. PINE

I agree, Mach1, he has that Californian drawl. Great voice too. He’s the most interesting leading-man type of his generation, hands down. Most of the current crop lack that classic, old-fashioned manliness which was a trademark of some our coolest leading men from the past (McQueen to Newman, Harrison Ford to Bruce Willis).
Pine seems a throwback to those guys. He seems to be the real deal. And I’m not xenophobic, I’m a fan of a lot of the Aussies & Brits playing Americans nowadays, but it sure is great to see a homegrown, all-American actor heading for superstar status after a long time.
