Giants and Phillies Celebrate Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Shatner Gets A Baseball Card

Star Trek and baseball, two great traditions, meet once again this season with special days celebrating the 30th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Giants and Phillies to hold Star Trek Nights celebrating 30th Anniversary of TNG

Opening day for the new season of Major League Baseball is only two weeks away (Monday, April 3rd) and teams across the league are just announcing their scheduled special events. Two of these events are of special interest to Star Trek fans. First up: Friday, September 1st will be “Star Trek Night” at AT&T park in San Francisco. The Giants are playing the St. Louis Cardinals and promising “various pre-game and in-game elements will be themed around Star Trek, making you feel like you are stepping right onto the set of this iconic franchise!” The Giants also note that San Francisco is special to Trek because it’s home of Starfleet Command, which may be why the Giants have held a number of Star Trek days in the past.  If you purchase a special event ticket you’ll get a collector’s edition Star Trek/Giants T-Shirt commemorating the 30th Anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation. More information and tickets at MLB.com.

And on Tuesday, September 26th, the Philadelphia Phillies will be holding a special Star Trek: The Next Generation 30th Anniversary Night at Citizens Bank Park, where they will be taking on the Washington Nationals. The first 3,000 fans who purchase tickets will receive a coupon for an exclusive Phillies Captain Picard bobble figurine. More information and tickets at MLB.com.

Shatner Gets a Baseball Card

These Star Trek Days have been a somewhat regular occurrence at major and minor league baseball games over the years. There were a few of them last year celebrating the 50th anniversary of the franchise, including one with the Boston Red Sox, which featured the original Captain Kirk, William Shatner, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. This special moment is being commemorated by the Topps baseball card company.

A William Shatner card is part of the Topps series of “First Pitch” cards included in the 2017 Baseball Series 1 collection. The Shatner card is one of 20 celebrity First Pitch cards included this year.

Of course, as with all baseball cards, it is part of the fun of collecting to find specific cards which are randomly sorted into the various packs sold by Topps. However, if you want to skip all that, you can buy just the Shatner card from some sellers on Amazon, currently priced at $3.99.

This is kinda neat. Nice to see Trek still has this kind of pull.

For a show that didn’t get much respect in its first two years at bat, TNG wound up doing pretty well for itself.

Gotta think a lot of people who grew up with TNG are now in their 40s and 50s, which is sort of prime real estate for baseball fans. That’s really not a dig, I’m a TNG and baseball fan… in my 40s. And kids of course know it from the new movies (which hopefully lead them to check out the tv shows).

Yeah, it’s really cool to see Trek infiltrate the mainstream like this. I mean, what’s more average-Joe, mainstream than baseball. Pretty awesome to see Trek’s influence there and be reminded that it’s not just a bunch of nerds and geeks–one of us…one of us…)–that appreciate it.

Why didn’t the phillies just do a red command t shirt?.
The phillies colors are red and white. It would have made more sense than the orange shirt. The phillies are my team but there are so many Picard bobble heads out there already.

NX… The Orange shirt is the Giants giveaway. Giant Orange and it has the SF logo on the bottom as well.

I gleaned that NX would rather have a Phillies version of the shirt than the bobblehead

I want that Trek/Giants shirt!

I don’t like the Giants, but I’d wear that shirt.

Orange works for the Orioles too, I’ll just pin a Orioles logo over the SF:)
I ran over to the park last year to get the 1701 Giants bobblehead, might have to do that but $137 for a t shirt is a little steep ¯_(ツ)_/¯
