On Wednesday the sound mixers guild (CAS) nominated Star Trek, and on Friday the sound editors guild (MPSE) announced their nominations and Star Trek led the field with three nods. Details below, plus a summary of the guild nominations and info on which ones are being awarded this weekend.

The only other film to get the trifecta of nominations was Avatar. District 9 was nominated in the separate foreign feature film category. The complete list of nominees is available at THR. The Golden Reel Awards will be handed out at ceremonies on Feb. 20 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.

The SAG Awards are on Saturday. The show is aired on TNT at 8 pm (ET/PT). But the Stunt Ensemble Award will actually be handed out during the red carpet webcast live online at tnt.tv and tbs.com at 6:15 p.m. (ET), 3:15 p.m. (PT). The stunt award is being given away by none other than SAG committee member (and Star Trek Enterprise star) Scott Bakula.
The PGA awards are on Sunday, but those are not televised. Star Trek producers JJ Abrams and Damon Lindelof have been nominated for producers of the year and are likely to be in attendance.
The other guilds that nominated Trek will all be doing their awards February.
Oscar Nomination Polls are closed
Today was the final day for members of the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to hand in their ballots for nominations. The nominations will be announced February 2nd. The Academy Awards show airs on ABC on March 7th, and will be hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Just this week ABC released promo photos of the two hosts.

another day another awards nominations…fantastic work by the sound crew…well deserved…more reasons why the film rocked…not just for directing and acting and vfx…but the sound too…all added to a wonderful film

The JJprise is on routine patrol. The sound of a Russian toilet flushing signals the arrival via turbo-lift of AJ to the bridge.
Kirk: Mr. J, you have toilet paper on your bootheel.
AJ: Sorry, Captain. Someone’s been using the turbo-lift as a potty again.
Ensign BND: Awwwk. Works just fineedandee, till you try to get to the lower section and the whole blasted thingee turns over. I gots ta pick these lady napikins oot me hair.
Kirk: Nevermind that, navigator. Take us to warp.
Ensign BND: I’d surely likee ta do dat, Cap’n Emo, but the sonical boom would break the winders.
Spock: Ensign, a sonic boom is an atmospheric event caused by an object accelerating faster than the forward air can evacuate. There is no air in space, hence no sonic event.
Commodore The’Mo’Pic’So’Ed’Go’Ree’Aw: Whatever, Avatar’s gonna get the prize anyway.
Ensign BND: I guess their girlie Na’vi napis magically float away. Aaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

The sound effects in Trek 09 were simply awesome. One above all: the classic transporter sound, with the “ping” indicating the lock-on.
Completely off-topic, but Jean Simmons past away today. She gave what is in my opinion one of the best Star Trek performances as Admiral Satie in TNG. We should have a thread to this methinks…

There sure are a lot of guilds. As well as awards. Perhaps too many. Its kind of getting a bit ridiculous actually. A lot of these guilds happen to be redundant and unnecessary in my opinion. As glad as I am that “Star Trek” is being recognized, there comes a point when the idea of a nomination or award becomes watered down.
14 – It’s nice to know the guy under my car is ‘mechanic of the year,’ but you’re right — it’d probably be hard to sit through ‘The Goober Awards.’ The guilds serve a purpose, and if it’s your career you want the awards. But, it’s kinda boring to us civies.
If Avatar wins a single sound award it proves the voters don’t even listen to their movies.
At least half the sounds in Avatar were ripoffs from Jurassic Park!

WTF? Really? What guilds are redundant in your estimation? Do you have any idea how many specialized people are involved in making a movie like Star Trek a success?
That said, I don’t expect Star Trek to win any sound awards. The rest of the competition outclassed it on so many levels. Star Trek was a noisy mess and considering what I read about the troubles they had getting it to where it ended up, I can attest it sounds like it.
guild awards watered down? I think you dont understand how the guilds work. Each guild has their own contract with the studios.
And In fact being nominated by a guild is quite an achievement because those are your peers. The directors are voting on directors, VFX for VFX, etc. Each discipline is different.

Star Trek would be well deserving of any and all of these awards. Sure I’m biased but the movie is a joy to listen to.
My apologies. What I wrote was totally off base and uncalled for.
I’ve posted some idiotic and ignorant comments lately for reasons for which there are no excuses. Of course, the guilds have every right to recognize the hard working men and women of movie making.
