There was a tease of mirror Borg at the end of the Terran Gambit arc…wonder if these could be them.

Captain Harry Kim

This game has official jumped the shark.

Why?

Captain Harry Kim.

He was Captain in Endgame. That was already over 20 years ago. This can’t be a surprise he would be one again.

Exactly. Anyone who thinks a Starfleet officer becoming captain after decades of service is a jump-the-shark moment doesn’t understand what a jump-the-shark moment is.

Anyone who thinks someone calling something so obvious a jump the shark moment is being serious must not have a good eye for detecting a joke based on a well known meme/long established bit about how Harry never gets promoted while everyone else does.

No. Try again.

You’re right, an obvious reference to the show runner created inside joke of “Well, someone has to be the Ensign” in response to why Harry never got promoted yet Tom got promoted, demoted, and promoted again during Voyager’s run… combined with the recent renewal of popularity in the joke of “everyone gets promoted but Harry” by way of memes of Harry finding out that Seven got promoted to Captain on Picard not being noticed must mean you are the BEST at spotting an absurdist joke.

LOL, well played! 100% Agreed

That’s not true. He’s been promoted Captain on STO for years. Also in the novels. He was going to be Captain in Picard as well.

And he was promoted Captain in Endgame. He just didn’t get promoted when he was in Delta Quadrant. He’s not in the DQ anymore. 😎

“You’re right, an obvious reference to the show runner created inside joke of “Well, someone has to be the Ensign” in response to why Harry never got promoted yet Tom got promoted, demoted, and promoted again during Voyager’s run… combined with the recent renewal of popularity in the joke of “everyone gets promoted but Harry” by way of memes of Harry finding out that Seven got promoted to Captain on Picard not being noticed must mean you are the BEST at spotting an absurdist joke.”

That was because they were in the Delta Quadrant. ONCE the guy got out of DQ, he was promoted, correct? So he didn’t stay an ensign. Endgame made clear he would go on to a long and successful career, so what are we missing?

And this was never a ‘joke’ because there is not one piece of media in Beta canon where Harry stayed an ensign. Every post-Voyager story, novels, games, comic books, etc he was at least a commander. Not always necessarily a Captain, but superior rank.

Someone mentioned Janeway’s biography which I knew nothing about until now, but here is a blurb I found:

According to The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway, Kim eventually married Libby after his return to the Alpha Quadrant and he gets promoted to captain rapidly.

That came out 3 years ago btw.

In another STO game, he’s Captain there too:

In Dust to Dust, the player and Captain Harry Kim return to Kobali Prime to repel a Vaadwaur attack, and discover a secret the Kobali have been harboring.

That game came out in 2015, 8 years ago lol.

As stated, he was suppose to be Captain in Picard this year too. Matalas own words on the matter:

He was Captain, actually. I talked to Garrett [Wang] about it. He was very, very disappointed. He was Captain and yeah, that’s all I can say about it.

And now he’s Captain yet again in this game. I know everyone here is super super old, but Voyager ended over 20 years ago now. There has been lots of post-Voyager stories since and in every single one of them, he was promoted and excelled through the ranks. And as shown, he was going to be Captain in Picard as well. It’s odd that people think him being an ensign 20 years after the fact has always been a ‘thing’ in Trek. It never was as shown.

I personally love Harry and one of my favorite characters. He has saved the ship countless times and one of the smartest and hardest working people on the ship, so why would he stay one?

Yes, 100% correct.

Learn how to construct understandable sentences.

No, you don’t understand how promotions work in a navy/Starfleet. When you are stuck at junior officer rank for like a decade, you are almost never going to make a high rank. That’s just the way it is.

…in the real world. But not necessarily in Starfleet.

Here’s the deal. In the prime universe, the years go on and on and he is still at Ensign, and that is not ONE SINGLE SCENE where Janeway is considering or discussing promoting him…yet, Tuvok had a promotion party in one episode, and B’Elanna was promoted ahead of him at the beginning of the show, and she didn’t even graduate from the Academy.

What does that tell you?

Apply Ocaam’s Razor — do we need to go through all kinds of conjecture and reasoning outside of canon, including video games (lol) to say he made Captain, or do we go by what we know to be official on-screen canon on Voyager. The answer is obvious — the simplest solution is that he was a poor performer who is never likely to make it beyond Lt in Starfleet.

This is the same brain trust that made Tilly a first officer after being ensign for a year and Seven is now Captain of the Enterprise G who wasn’t even in Starfleet a year ago herself. Burnham created mutiny and she’s now a Captain. How many navy officers still got to be Captains after trying to form a rebellion lol. Someone already mentioned Kelvin Kirk who wasn’t even an officer either and just played around. Did also 18 year old Ensign Chekhov who was made Chief of Engineer on whim by Kirk as well? This is Star Trek, not the real world lol.

I wouldn’t blink if we found out Kim was Fleet Admiral by now.

That line should’ve been ‘Did we also forget 18 year old Ensign Chekhov was made Chief of Engineer…?”

TM PLEASE fix the editing feature.

Making Silly Tilly an XO, even if just temporary was just all around dumb.

And she was only an XO because Cry Baby Burnham disobeyed direct orders a-g-a-i-n and busted her back down in rank for the second time. The first time was being a mutineer as you mentioned. That’s as ridiculous as an ex-President who tried to create an insurrection to stay in power becomes President again. But look at that she’s Captain anyway. 😂🙂😒🤬

Burnham should still be in prison, not s Captain.Anothet reminder Discovery is just as bad as JJ verse at times.

Promotions are on Thursday.

I suspect there was an attempt at dry humor there. Relax….

LOL, exactly! :-)) Hehehe

Again… why? You haven’t actually said anything.

It’s called a joke. Harry is meme-d as forever Ensign Kim even as recently as memes joking that even Seven, a former Borg drone, got promoted before him.

Exactly. I mean, it’s a two decade running joke that has become a Trek urban legend…how any Trek fan can feign not knowing that that is beyond my imagination?

Well, since no one feigned being unaware of the joke, your comment is a non sequitur.

That was never a ‘joke’. Fratboy Kirk being promoted from cadet to captain is a joke. 🙄

Harry has been promoted in other novels and games for years now. You obviously hasn’t played any games or read the novels.

Ok again, why?

Captain Harry Kim just sounds wrong.

Agreed. Besides, when you stay at a lower level rank that long in the real Navy, you would have basically a zero chance of ever making the rank of Captain. Lt would probably be the highest rank you could get if you were passed over for promotion from Ensign for nearly an entire decade.

I’m fairness, they were marooned in the Delta Quadrant for years. There wasn’t a lot of room to grow skill sets or responsibilities during that time. Tom Paris’ demotion was mostly symbolic.

But if Janeway was satisfied with his performance then she would have given him a field promotion to Lt. Then, everybody would refer to him as a Lt, and then when they got back, Starfleet would have likely approved the field promotion, and then he would have got X years back pay for the difference in the higher rank.

So to me, it’s telling that Janeway never did this. Obviously she was not impressed with your progress enough to consider him for responsibilities beyond and Ensign.

Again, Kim was promoted Captain in Endgame! He wasn’t an Ensign 20 years later so why would he be one now all of a sudden? Every piece of Beta canon, the guy was promoted. Will clearly didn’t seem to know that since he was ‘surprised’ over a joke that was never actually a joke in the stories themselves, including, once again Voyager.

So it’s much ado about nothing. I suspect we’ll see him in either LDS or PRO soon and he’ll be a Lt at least.

Exactly. It’s not like anyone was ever getting transferred to another ship. And Janeway gave him command during night shifts so she clearly saw he could be a commander one day. How many times did Paris ever sit in the chair? I can only recall once in season 7.

Also, Kim’s duties seemed more consistent with a lieutenant rank. I suspect he transferred on as a deputy/night shift operations officer, initially took his post in alpha shift to get to know the command crew, and then the actual COO was killed during the Caretaker incident.

He was shown as a captain in the future in “Endgame,” so I’m not sure why anyone has a problem with it.

That was the bad future though. Seven was dead, Tuvok was sick, and Harry was a captain. That’s why Janeway had to change history.

That was the bad future though. Seven was dead, Tuvok was sick, and Harry was a captain. That’s why Janeway had to change history.

Exactly — that doesn’t prove anything, especially considering that immediately after those events, he once again did not get promoted in the prime universe — nor do we have any scene showing Janeway either discussing or recommending him for promotion.

Janeway knew he was never going to be senior officer material. If she had had real confidence in him, he would have been field promoted to Lt during all those years serving on the ship with her.

“Janeway knew he was never going to be senior officer material”

So she takes the Harvard College admissions office view of Asians as “lacking leadership and charisma” to kee them out?

There was no evidence she took this view – no logs, no private conversations with Chakotay. And aside from the Paris demotion and promotion, did anyone else get promoted?

That’s all conjecture. Fact — she never even gave him a field promotion to Lt, nor are there any scenes show where she was considering this.

As far as the reasons, in a military, it’s usually performance that holds you back from promotions.

Tuvok had a promotion party in one episode. And B’Elanna was promoted ahead of him at the beginning of the show, and she didn’t even graduate from the Academy.

Tuvok had a promotion party in one episode. And B’Elanna was promoted ahead of him at the beginning of the show, and she didn’t even graduate from the Academy.

YEP !!!

B’Elanna got promoted only because Chakotay pushed for it. Janeway originally thought it was crazy and wanted Carey to be Chief Engineer.

RIP Carey. 😥

And Tuvok got promoted because he’s been in Starfleet for 90 years. 🤣

Everyone is crying over Kim, it shouldn’t take a CENTURY for someone like Tuvok to make Captain. But I guess different field track and all of that like the Redshirt d-i-c-k-s on Lower Decks kept going on about. I really hate those guys. 🤬

Janeway gave Kim night command of the ship. She saw he could be a leader or why give him that responsibility at all. These people clearly never watched the show. 🙄

And I’m guessing he became Captain in the future because Janeway probably put in a good word and they stayed friends.

I think that’s why all the Maquis were exonerated because she vouched for all of them too.

Janeway’s word goes a long way in Starfleet… unless you’re Seven. 😒

It wasn’t a ‘baf future ‘ because Kim was Captain. 🤪

Weak excuse. Especially since he became Captain again when they got home the second time in beta cannon. That’s why this argument is bezarre. It has already happened several times now.

It jumped the MEG with this one…Captain, when he was stuck at Ensign for nearly a decade? That’s not in the cards in any real navy — no way.

lol!

“Captain” Harry Kim…Riiiiight…LMFAO…and I’ve got a great investment for you in my new Camp Lejeune Mineral Water Venture.

LOL — nope, sorry, but he’s still an Ensign in canon, and I bet he always will be. :-)

Simply untrue. “Endgame” already revealed that he’d make captain.

Agreed! He definitely would get there. I like to think he was captain of Voyager-B on Frontier Day.

Your “just trust me, he would get there” just doesn’t drive with how promotions work in real navies. And a dark, radically altered alternate history, one-off ep, isn’t very compelling.

Starfleet isn’t a “real world navy” Kim’s time as an ensign was also off in deep space etc, I imagine the first thing starfleet did upon voyager’s return was career eval’s and I imagine they would have taken one look at Kim and said “this guy should have been promoted given his responsabilities”

My head canon, before LD/Prod/Pic was he received a fast track to LTC and eventually made captain of the Rhode Island. Hopefully, we will see what happened to him in a post nemesis show at some point.

LOL

He was supposed to be a Captain in Picard. Terry Matalas confirmed it. So yes, that’s probably what would’ve happened and he got fast tracked.

Simply untrue. That was a severely changed alternate, dark history.

In the prime history, he never gets past Ensign in the normal timeframe where his peers would get promoted to Lt grade. And if you are stuck in a lower rank like that for a decade, in any real navy there is no way you are ever going to make Commander, let alone Captain. Lt. is his ceiling given he’s been passed over for promotion so many times.

It is what it is.

Guys he was already a captain in this game before this arc.

This. STO is set THIRTY YEARS after Nemesis. Things change.

And the meme didn’t become a thing until 2017 or so.

Yeah and at this rate it’s tired and overdone.

Obviously none of these guys have played any of the games or read the books. Harry has been a Captain in STO for years. He was promoted Captain in the Janeway biography as well.

In STO he was already a commander since 2010 IIRC. So the ‘joke’ died over 13 years ago and some of these are just now realizing it. 🤣

Harry Kim made Captain?! (full disclosure, I made it through much less than half of VOYAGER.) Hope it is the USS RED SHIRT …

Lol, agreed.

Those of you acting like it’s somehow ridiculous that Harry Kim made captain need to consider Star Trek history:

Michael Burnham, a convicted mutineer, became captain.

Kirk, in the Kelvin timeline, became captain after staging a mutiny without even going through the ranks in between.

Janeway, after violating the Temporal Prime Directive and vastly changing history and committing genocide, became an admiral.

Mirror-Georgiou, despite being a genocidal, psychopathic dictator, was put in a position of power in Starfleet Intelligence.

So was Ash Tyler, a Klingon spy.

In other words, Starfleet has a long history of promoting people arbitrarily and often counterproductively. To say that Harry Kim’s captaincy makes no sense… well, makes no sense.

Agreed! I’m going with he made captain, eventually. Hopefully, we will see him soon.

Kirk, Janeway, and Michael are extraordinary. They’re the best Starfleet has to offer. They’ve all saved the Federation and completed seemingly impossible missions. And S31 likes people who are morally ambiguous. But Harry isn’t extraordinary or morally ambiguous. He’s just the goofball who gets tricked into thinking he’s an alien so that aliens can breed with him, or who starts glowing after he has sex with an alien. He’d fit right in with the Lower Deckers.

Trip Tucker wasn’t also that? Those things are like normal for starfleet officers, why would they keep anyone from being promoted

Kim has saved the ship countless times. He’s one of the smartest people on the ship and why he’s always assisting everyone from B’Elanna to Seven.

And Kim isn’t the first character in Star Trek to be tricked by aliens. That’s become a Star Trek trope onto itself.

The guy has been Captain in games and books for literally years already.

It’s like someone is shocked to learn Star Trek has had a woman Captain before… but now against it. 😉

I feel like this current arc is going to culminate with some sort of events where this timeline is replaced by the Prime timeline to bring it closer to the events of Picard.

Can they please stop screwing around with the uniforms!
