Keeping this question or comment strictly to the reasons for it.

I’ll admit, there have been times I have pushed the envelope of decency either directly or metaphorically. Sorry Anthony. I’ll try and be less blantant.

Some posters push passionate feelings to a level of emotional adolescence, perhaps just to encite the bantering as you say.

So exactly or specifically what is it that will “piss you off”? Because there have been some posts that would have made me raise a Vulcan eyebrow, yet no comment from you. Your thick skin must have a developed blister somewhere for the need of the “Piss me off policy”

firstly I cannot claim to read every post, so do not assume if you read something I approve of it. I have stated that I do not want to see spamming, flaming or trolling…the usual. I also like things to stay on topic and lately that has been a big big problem…and more to the point it seems to be almost an organised effort to use this site as part of some campaign…i will not tolerate that.

I will be writing up a set of formal posted rules, but I think anyone who has followed this site for the last few weeks has been seeing my growing frustration with constant diversions to a certain topic and the ugly fighting that ensues.

Tony great site. Yet again, in your summary of the conversation with Branna, Josht T. is attacking any body that does not seem to agree with his opinion and using offensive language.

I understand that you cannot read all posts but how many times does he have to be warned? I just want to point out that while those who like ir dislike Brannon can debate it openly and honestly, he calls us ass kisses, etc. I admitt I asked questions of him and why he needs to attack other but I do not feel they were offensive, and yet I got a very rude response. I have to ask what if young Trek fans were reading these posts? And saw his offensive language etc? This is a great site, but it is getting off putting seeing Josh’s posts, if they voiced his opinion without the language and attacks I would not have a complaint, but he has gone to far in ignoring your warnings etc.

Hey, Anthony….a while back I suggested a name for the site could be TrekMoviePlus.com. The last time I checked it was available and I know how you wanted to have the name signify that this site was about more than just the upcoming movie. Feel free to use the suggestion….I think it has merit!

I think a forum would make a lot of sense for this site. In that format, one could simply look at a list of threads to see those which are still “alive,” rather than having to run through each article. I’m constantly surprised at how many blogs are still active 3, 4 weeks after the original article was posted. It could be a real timesaver.

But then, again, I’m just an semi-old fartette who remembers (not always fondly) the days of Usenet. Just my .02.

Josh was banned for breaking rules, not his opinions…he was banned for repeatedly disregarding warnings. And bear in mind you have not seen some of the things he has posted that had to be deleted (including some very uncool attacks on myself and others)…he is not welcome here. It is a mistake to view those who get warned/banned as being disciplined for their point of view…it is for flaming, spamming and other violations of general netiquette.

Yeah. One of the reasons I’m all in favour of a registration/forum setup is the ability to edit posts. The other day, it looked like I flamed trektacular and I really didn’t mean to. If I’d been able to assess the post on a preview first, I could have changed a couple of words instead of creating an unnecessary fuss!

There are always certain posters who are deliberate stirrers and, on a vulnerable day, I’ll walk straight into their trap and lose my temper. At least on a forum setup I can follow the rule of ‘Think, think again, then post!’

Also, I guess it’ll be a lot harder for people to post under multiple identities with registration too. Given I only have hotmail and aintitcool addresses, I am slightly concerned that I’ll be blocked, though, as many boards won’t recognise these addresses!

Anyway, Anthony, you’re running a great site that’s brought me back into the Trek fold after a decade or more away. Thank you! :)

Just a general comment.

This is a terrific site, Anthony, and you’ve done a great job in really making it unique and not just at the forefront of “breaking news,” but of generally intelligent discussion of Trek stuff.

I’m looking forward to the increased diversity of things we’ll be able to talk about with the new forums, but I admit I’m a little disappointed to see the current format go. When everyone was forced to interact via the comments, it made for a more free-wheeling, we’re-all-in-this-together sort of atmosphere. Smaller and more intimate. It didn’t have the forced compartmentalization that comes with dedicated forums.

But I know that the benefits of forums will outweigh that, and are necessary for a site of growing popularity. I’m looking forward to them.

Anyway, keep up the good work. I’m having fun with Trek again for the first time in years, and part of that is due to having this venue available.

Again I’m sorry if what i have said seems to offend you or the people posting here, but I guess I expected too much. I have said many times how much I ENJOY the remastered shows. All I did was point out the hypocrisy of those complaining about them. So I guess there is plenty of room to complain about all the technical errors, but not about how silly it seems to do so.
I enjoy the discussions regarding the stories, the acting, the continuity issues etc… I have been really amused with the COMPLAINING that goes on. Apparently, there is no room for real discourse here. Yes, you have warned me. I guess I’ll never be able to post here again. My life will be over. Do what you must. So much for the Trek philosophy of different views.
Poor Trekkers can’t take a little criticism, but you can sure dish it out.
I’m sure I will be shut off after this. I’m sure you will all be happy that I am not around to challenge you anymore.

as stated in #14, people are warned for breaking the rules of netiquette and not for their opinions…and for disregarding previous warnings. Peer into any active thread and one will see a diversity of opinions, what is discouraged is the attacking of others.

I NEVER attacked any specific person, But I was attacked for my views, and responded. I pointed out the general hypocrisy , & foolishness of many of the complaints(in my opinion) .Like I said you can dish it out, but you can’t take it.

What are you so upset about?

I think if it was the goal to get new fans interested into this franchise,I kinda think they failed at doing it.Because the lack of special FX seems like they are catering to the original fans who already like the show,and they don’t even want the updated FX in the first place.

The new fans that this show is trying to get should do there research better,because the people they are trying to make into new fans are people who are use to seeing amazing sci-fi special FX.

Seems like this project took one step forward,but two steps back.Like on an episode you start to build enthusiasm when you see the new Enterprise in space shooting updated phasers(one step forward),but then you see the Gorn who looks like a guy in a cheap suit(two steps back) which makes you lose the enthusiasm that you were building for the show.

How does it change the story if you use a stuntman to play Kirk,and another stuntman in a better lizard costume(or a CGI Gorn)to have a better fight?It doesn’t change the story at all,the only thing you do is build enthusiasm because people would be into the fight,instead of bored with it so they change the channel.

-$219 for this dvd set is a joke,your not gonna sell that much of them.For one the original fans didn’t want the updated changes so they will pass on it,and the other people wanted everything updated which you didn’t do,so they will pass on it too.

You need to update this set before it comes out,otherwise you have failed at what you were trying to do,which is create new fans.Cater to these potential fans,and update everything.

-The Enterprise bridge,update the monitors,because they look like paintings,it doesn’t take you out of the show to see updated monitors,it takes you out of the show to see a painting in the display of the monitor.

-Make all the planets look different instead of each planet looking like earth.It really takes you out of the show when you see each planet looks like earth,because it feels like they aren’t even exploring the universe at all.(Lets see two moons orbiting next to some of the planets,see different color planets,landscapes,etc.)

-Update all the mattes,create amazing landscape for the planets for when the crew goes down to check things out.

-CGI the bad costumes to the aliens like the Gorn,that guy in the rabbit suit,etc.You don’t want people to turn the channel when these episodes come on,you think your gonna get people to pay $219 for these dvds with those terrible looking aliens?

-Update all of the hand held phaser beams.And make them all one color,except for the rifle phasers,or the alien phasers,then you can use a different color and effect.

-Use CGI to make some alien skins different colors,to add some alien type eyes to some,to make the plague people look better,etc.

-Use stuntmen to make the fights better.

I am both perplexed and frustrated at your selective warnings for spamming. SEAN was more frequent and at least as imflammatory with his remarks and yet no such warning for him. Also, my initial posts were to describe my displeasure with certain choices by the producers; any subsequent posts (by me) were in response to criticisms or comments aimed in my direction by fellow posters. I’d like to think it hasn’t come to the point that any of us regular contributors aren’t allowed to express our opinion, whether it be positive or negative, and that we be allowed to defend ourselves from personal attacks. Barring that, if you are going to warn people that they may be banned based on ANY rules that you request, then I would suggest that you be consistent and FAIR in enforcing such restrictions. SEAN deserved the same warning as his posts were DESIGNED to stir up trouble! I would really like to hear YOUR feedback on this……..

I would like clarification on something. One would presume you’d like this website to have both engaging and interesting posts, otherwise why would anyone come to it? With that in mind it would seem to make sense that any dialogue about Trek, or responding to other poster’s comments, would be fair game. It’s bound to get colourful once in a while because, after all, how often can we debate the shape of nacelle caps? The humour can be corny right up to ribald, but nothing as coarse as, say, The Shatner Roast on Comedy Central (that would be gross and distasteful). With that in mind I’m truly surprised that you keep sanctioning me for what would seem to be relatively low-key humour. Any reader going to a Comedy Club would hear a lot worse than THAT!

I’m reminded of a line by Q (when he is criticized by Picard and crew) who says, “I add a little excitement to your lives and all you can do is complain?”

I would think with your regular “posters” being entertaining to most readers, that you would show a little more latitude in censoring what we write. But, who knows, maybe you’re already (in your mind) showing that flexibility now?!

Anyhoo, since a number of us spend considerable time typing out clever observations and comments for YOUR audience to enjoy, I would think you’d show a little more finesse and understanding before you strangle the goose who is laying those golden eggs for you………….if you ban the half-dozen of us who skirt close to the line, it’ll end up being a pretty dull site, don’t you think??

And, after 246 votes, it shows how the true majority feel. 78% of that say he’s not a requirement for people to go see the movie.

My response was essentially that it would be wrong to take this poll as evidence that Shatner should not be in the movie. I stated that since this is a site devoted to Trekkies, if 22% of the people here actually decide to boycott the movie, that is actually a huge number. I stated that there is probably no other actor whose absence in the movie would keep 22% of fans away.

I then stated that it’s important to keep in mind the wording of the poll. The way it was worded would not distinguish those who support Shatner from those who do not. The question asked if Shatner’s participation was a requirement to even see the movie. Therefore, the question will work to distinguish a rather extreme group (those who will never see the movie without Shatner, even if it has many great qualities) from everyone else (including those who hate Shatner, those who don’t care about Shatner, those who like Shatner a lot and wish he was in the movie, and those who love him and have been begging for his involvement but who will see the movie regardless). I also stated that if the question had been worded the other way around (Is Shatner’s participation in the movie a requirement for you seeing it?), almost no one would say that his non-involvement is a requirement for seeing it.

I also added that there are many ways to see a movie these days, some of which make more money for the studio than others. If Shatner gets left out and that bothers me enough, I might wait and watch it with my brother or a friend after they purchase a copy of the DVD, rather than going to the theatre myself.

#403 Iowagirl and #404 John N. both commented that they liked the post and I had made good points.

Shortly thereafter, the post that I had made was gone. (I still have a post at #399, but that one used to be #401)

I didn’t receive any kind of warning or anything, so I’m assuming I didn’t do anything too awful. However, the disappearance of the post has left me puzzled. I am assuming that it did not just disappear by accident. Rather, I suspect that you removed it. I want to emphasize here that I am not complaining, but only inquiring. I wonder if you interpreted my post as a criticism of your poll. If so, I would like to say that I wasn’t criticizing the poll, but rather, pointing out that the poll does not show what some people might think it means – like #394 RaveOnEd. And just so I know for the future, should I refrain from criticizing future polls? On the other hand, I wonder if you might have taken offense when I stated that there are plenty of ways to watch movies that do not make money for the studio. Just for the record, I was not supporting illegal downloading when I stated that I could just watch my brother’s copy of the movie. Perhaps I should have made it more clear that he buys DVDs quite frequently, would probably buy STAR TREK, and I could then watch his DVD with him sometime.

Again, I do not mean to complain. But if I did something wrong, I’d like to know so that I don’t do it again in the future.

P.S.
This is an amazing site. The message boards are easy to follow (not like on some other ST sites). And the news is fast and reliable. AND, you have attracted some people who are actually involved in various ST projects. Pretty cool.

Hi Anthony,
I just stumbled across this feedback section and it has educated me some more. Although I work in IT and run a business that uses the net and PC’s to capacity, I’ve never been interested in prolonged reading or posting of comments on other sites (unless they were forums for technical advise) until TREKMOVIE.COM

Most columns like this that I have read over the years do get off track, do degenerate into childish personal attacks, negativity, foul language and sometimes just plain filth. Some people are so negative that I wonder how they can be Star Trek fans. In this world of Wars and terrorism, it’s Gene’s positive outlook on humanity that keep’s me going. I enjoy all things Star Trek, the good and the bad.

I have often wondered how you dealt with bad posts. The fact that you write to people directly is good because they don’t get embarrassed publically even if they embarrass themselves with their comments. There have been posts that have gone down the “unacceptable” path from time to time but your site always seems to “clean up” quickly. The fact that you have visiting dignitaries like writers and actors is a testament to your diligence.

I now visit TrekMovie several times a day and feel confident I can at times add something to the debate. Here in Oz we are as Star Trek mad as you guys, we just live a bit further away. It’s sites like yours that keep us up to date and make me feel we are one big “intelligent” family as opposed to a bunch of geeks. Each time I come to your site it’s like getting home from work and discussing the day with the family.

So now I know a bit more of how you run things, keep up the good work and I look forward to the next twelve months of banter about the new Star Trek and more of you hard work!

Well I didn’t use foul or threatening language and MY post was deleted for sticking up for a post that was only voicing a civil opinion. The reply from Garth was abusive and yet it remains!

Respectfully Anthony, perhaps you should review this protocol which screens your posts and find out what’s happening.

I enjoy this website and all you do. But I feel that some people are allowed to get away with things that others can’t. Please apply the rules, whatever they may be, to all equally! Thanks.

Fair enough Anthony.

I agree with all of your intentions. But please tell me why you allowed Garth’s attack of Steve to remain while my defense of him was deleted. I don’t think Steve’s post was out of line, nor was mine, but Garth’s veiled profanity and juvenile insults was not also deleted. I guess that is what bothers me. If you are going to break up a fight you don’t just hold back one person.

I am not the type of person who engages in, or enjoys, flame wars. I am glad that you keep the peace. But I feel like the rules are not applied equally to all!

Anthony - brilliant site! Really well done!

Has there been any news on merchandising for the new movie yet? It seems like we are close enough to the release date that work on action figures, models, etc should be underway given that those contracts will be pretty large (assuming a marketing strategy like Transformers and Spider-man).

In the past, merchandising has been a reliable way (if we ignore Generations) for getting info on the look of the film like uniforms, ship designs, characters, etc.

Just curious as to why there has been so little information on that area of the film’s development.

Reguarding “Science Friday”

Hello Anthony,
There seems to be alot of energy focused on a manned mars mission, and there is a science channel special called Mars Rising that is narrated by William Shatner. It is quite a series that I highly recommend you view. I think this focus on mars would be an awesome addition to your site. Nasa.gov has a vast cache of data, and imagery that would be relevant. A manned mission to mars is not only a dream, but a passion of millions. Billions have already been spent by the U.S. to make this a reality. Your site could bridge the ever-narrowing gap between sci-fiction, and sci-fact.
I think every trekker has a thirst for real science.

I love your site. I just wanted to point out something you probably already know, but I wanted to contribute anyway. =) Karl Urban is going to be in a tv series on CBS I believe starting on December 31st called Commanche Moon. It’s part of the Lonesome Dove series and stars Rachel Griffiths, Steve Zahn, and Val Kilmer. Karl will be playing the role of Texas Ranger, Woodrow F. Call which was originally played by Tommy Lee Jones in Lonesome Dove. I recommend this prequel as a chance to see our new Dr. McCoy in action and because Lonesome Dove is an excellent story.

Of course I love this site, but then again I’m an original Trekkie.
My question is: why am I not able to participate in the “voting?” It seems whenever I click on my selection, a notice comes back saying “You had already voted…” when, in fact, I had not. Does anyone else get this? Do I need to change some browser setting? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

mike, please note your broser, version and OS. The poll gets hundreds of votes a day so it is working, but maybe not with every browser. I know it works fine on two of my machines running firefox, netscape, IE and even on my iphone’s safari. It might also be a plug in for your browser.

I love the site!

Unless I’m missing an article, a big piece of Trek Movie news slipped by right under everyone’s nose. Are you familiar with Randy Pausch? He’s the creator of the Alice Program which teaches kids how to program and use virtual reality. Well, he has terminal pancreatic cancer and is presumed to only have a few months to live. He’s made the media rounds as of late for giving ‘The Last Lecture’ at Carnegie Mellon. If you watch it, you will realize that he is an AMAZING human being!

Anyway, he is a HUGE Trek fan, and JJ Abrams ended up contacting last month and offered him a small cameo in the new movie if Randy’s health was good enough. Randy accepted the role and shot a scene. He even has a line in the movie where he says, “Captain, we have visual!”

Hi. I know this might sound off but would it be possible for you to pass my details to Roberto Orci? I know that sounds like a fanboy wish-dream but it’s potentially to his advantage.

I was one of the staff writers on the XENA magazine when he was on the show, I interviewed him and we had some correspondance back then. I’m a big fan of his writing.

Obviously I’ve not spoken to him since the magzine ended but I’m now doing some work in UK radio and am in a position where I’d liked to contact him about some potential UK based work that we could offer him that would not constitute strike breaking due to the medium/continent?

I’d appreciate it if you could do that. If you can’t I understand completely, but I’d ask that you delete this post from the feedback thread whether you can or not so no more people than neccesary see it?

I did not know that this section was available for comment on the site.

I think that politcal comments are made all the time in Trek, whatever form it takes. It was certainly Roddenberry’s intention to use the genre of science fiction in a future setting to make commentary on present day realities.

Roddenberry’s views are liberal politcally and socially, at least as viewed by those who are conservative politcally and socially,

When any form of Trek makes a social or political statement, whether it be “liberal” or “conservative”, there will be dissenting opinion.

For example, if Cawley in STNV or Andy Mangelis in his Trek novels uses a homosexual scene or character, they have made their politcial and social statement on that subject. With all due respect, while Cawley may say that the STNV episode is not about homosexuality, it may be a major point he is trying to make about his views on the subject.

However, this will spark debate and dissenting opinion. I think that if this is not expected or desired, controversial topics should be avoided in all forms of Trek. Of course, then it would not be Trek.

I find more and more that many who expect tolerance are the least willing to give it. The homosexual issue is a hot topic and the legitimacy of the lifestyle is not credibly established just because it is portrayed in an acceptable light in a movie, TV or Internet episode, or a novel.

I think that those who do not agree with the homosexual lifestyle are not well received on the site when our opinion is expressed. We are told to “get educated” and that homosexuality is God-ordained (per some posts in response to mine). As one who holds advanced degrees in theology, I can say that these comments are problematic at best.

I don’t mean to cause problems and I really enjoy the site. However, if controversial issues are not open for discussion, what does this say about tolerance in truth?

Yes, this is a fabulous site.
But I noticed more negative attention is paid to those who fight back hard, than those who actually start the flames. For instance, someone called me a shatner worshipper, which is clearly a flame since no one in their right mind thinks Shatner is a deity. But if one responds in kind, they often get the blame. It’s not right. The instigators need to be punished too but becuase they’re “left in the dust” so to speak, they are often get away with it.

No doubt that political and social debates usually degenerate quickly into somethng very ugly.

And I am sure you don’t want the site to turn into an arena for such debates. Frankly, I come here for fun and to get away from the seriousness of life for awhile.

However, Trek is about politics and social commentary, for good or bad.

I have to admit that I have always liked Trek best for the character relationships and much less for its commentary on issues of our day in the guise of the future.

Anthony, you do have a great site! One heck of a managerial challenge!

I guess I just have a hard time understanding why certain ppl. need to insult James and express sour grapes over his wonderful success.

As I said in a previous post, I know James is a big boy and doesn’t need anyone to defend him. It just really bothers me though that people would needlessly say nasty things about him without even knowing who he really is.

Cool, I didn’t realise that this feedback part existed, apologies.

This is about the point about forums that I raised in a separate topic and I see it’s been discussed above.

This idea is dependent on when TrekMovie is moving to it’s new host, if it’s quite soon then maybe the idea isn’t worth it, but if the move is a little way off then perhaps it’s worth thinking about.

Anyway this is the idea: I’d be quite happen to set up a free invisionboard for all the trekfans on this site, and from the looks of things I’m sure many people would be willing to help out. Then, once you’ve moved to the new host we could all just move over there.

Let me know if you’re interested.

I often get a strange unfitting advertisement… it’s not clearly seperated from the rest and extends into the normal text… and in these cases I cannot scroll down beacause there is no scrollbar (also doens’t work with mousewheel), so I refresh the pages until there is a new ad that is in a normal state (seperated) and the scrollbar is back again.

Enough of Shatner.

Hi Anthony, as you mentioned in the thread about the WGA strike being almost over, people diverted to Shatner once again. I know a lot of people can be very passionate about William Shatner one way or the other. Just look at Messages: 7,9,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,29,31,38,39,42,43,45,46,48,49,50,51,52,55. (I posted #55, I should have posted here) And this happens a lot.
I visit your site every day (there is a reason for that) to mostly read, and when the mood strikes, I’ll post. This is your site, and you can do as you please. However, certain individuals just can’t miss an opportunity to talk about Shatner, and this is becoming such a turn off. It use to be entertaining when we weren’t sure of the cast. Not any more.

I absolutely love the site. :)

There is one incident that is still bothering me a bit and it has to do with the Q and A with the cast and crew from a short while back.

I know it was a rather difficult experience to manage, but I still feel the need to officially voice my disappointment.

I felt that the folks who got their questions in on time were rather short changed. I’m sure other people didn’t get their questions answered either, but I felt that a lot of the questions that got pushed through, by people flooding the board, were completely pointless and truly a waste of this special opportunity.

My own question, while nothing to base a fifty million dollar scientific study upon, did dig a little deeper…and I was really hoping JJ would have had the chance to tackle it. Sadly, the board got slammed and silly questions like…’what color are the underwear’…got answered.

Anthony, I need a clarification. A comment of mine in the Strike news thread was deleted, as well as the poster whom I was commenting to. They mentioned the production team would now be able to write Shatner into the movie and my response was basically “don’t go there”. While I can’t speak for the other party, I can say I was just giving a friendly warning to them about raising the issue after what I’d read from you on the Boston Legal board.

I believe “trolling” means the same thing as if you were fishing. You put the “bait” on your hook, drop the line into the water and have your boat lazily going around the area dragging the line waiting for a fish to see the bait and grab it.

Just looked it up and found another meaning:

Someone may post something just to get a “war” going on one of the threads then sit back to watch the fireworks while others jump in and argue. Very frustraing.

In the last 2 days the advert on your main page is starting automatically and you can’t stop it, every so often it starts up again, even if you trying watch a topical imbeddded video.

I don’t know how these ads worked before but shouldn’t you have to click on them to make them start? I’m in Australia and there ’s only a limited number of times I wish to harrased by the armed forces which is the ad. that is currently playing.

I realise you don’t post these adds and you probabaly make revenue allowing them, but shouldn’t we have some control over them? You should be able to stop them playing at least. There are no navigation or control icons with the auto adds currently playing.

This is kinda nice, because it looks good as an overall theme, but I’ve noticed that it is so light and has so little contrast with the pure white background that it starts to strain my eyes after a very short time. Any chance of slightly darker text, Tony?

I am unable to post anything using my regular computer. Have I been banned based on my IP address? If so, I’d like to know why, since I’m a relatively infrequent poster on your site.

At present, I am positng from a different PC in a completely different location. However, when I try to post from my regular PC, the posts never appear in the thread, and if I try and post again, it gives me some sort of message saying “didn’t you already post that?” What gives?

Whenever I try to use a different name, it doesn’t work either. If I’ve been banned, I’d like to know why, because in my opinion, there are other folks out here who have said far meaner and nastier things. In fact, I don’t feel I’ve ever been mean or nasty.

First off, I agree there are a group of posters who, how shall I say, “lean” in a very pro Shatner direction. I don’t think there is any disagreement on this.

But I’d have to think that it wasn’t so much the labeling (If the shoe fits?) so much as the tone. Do I think the term groupies could apply: yes. But your use invokes a negative tone when paired with your previous “sycophant” comment.

Maybe if you fleshed out what you mean more methodically, perhaps siting previous posters posts to suit your argument, you wouldn’t catch the ire so much..

If TrekMovie.com can invite the asinine reflections of Mark Altman on a regular basis, it can certainly tolerate a differing conclusion on the nature and purpose of human sexuality–a deep and complex question, with sound, rational arguments on both sides, that has troubled philosophers, moralists, scientists, and theologians for millenia. You wanna ban some troll like #201, fine, go ahead. But #16 expressed a rather simple opinion, devoid of hatred and full of principled support for homosexuals despite his anti-homosexuality viewpoint, and you banned him for it.

I’m disgusted. Ban me for a week, too, Tony–more, if you like. And maybe go back and watch some Star Trek. They have a concept on the show called “IDIC”.

I’m very, very saddened by this when I otherwise hold you in such high regard.

I don’t understand why Adam E. was banned. I thought his posts were very neutral, if not pro gays-in-Trek. I offer a direct quote by Adam E.

“As far as including gay characters on screen, I see no reason why you should not. For all we know gay characters were already on screen and we don’t know it, the issue just wasn’t addressed. A storyline focusing on homosexuality could work if it was used to show how the world can advance in showing, tolerance, understanding and compassion. I believe this would only work on the small screen during a series and not as part of a motion picture.”

I have discussed this with several members of the Phase II forum and crew, individuals with opinions on both sides of this matter, and they all agree that Adam E’s post was both respectful and insightful into a different perspective. Then again, we don’t run this site.

If Trekmovie considers having a valid, non offensive, opinion to be intolerance simply because it doesn’t include an overt endorsement of ANY lifestyle (straight, alternative, or otherwise) then I cannot and will not continue my support of this website. I implore Anthony to freely express his thoughts behind Adam E’s banishment. I can understand wanting to gain control of the comment board before it grew into a mud fight, but this was excessive.

For what it’s worth, I have to agree with these guys.

A Star Trek site has to be able to handle incredible differences of opinion. There may be Trek fans out there who have beliefs that encourage love of diversity, perhaps because they adhere to an organized religion which encourages it. But just not for homosexuals.

Trekmovie.com has to tread that thin line because Star Trek, at its best, does. And Trek has attracted dedicated fans from so many places and orientations. Allow the posts, and let the debates rage, if necessary.

I have to agree with Anthony on the bans. The point of the thread was to discuss the question of a gay character on Star Trek. Whether you abide homosexuality personally is beyond the point. There are plenty of posters on the thread who expressed nuanced opinions against certain ways of depicting gay characters on Star Trek — those were not banned or singled out. It’s the ones who saw fit to take on the issue of homosexuality *itself* who got in trouble, and rightly so, in my opinion.

Adam E. said “By looking at the future optimistically, as Star Trek is known to do, I would hope that in the future those with these unnatural attractions would strive to live chaste lives. I would also hope that mankind would be tolerant, understanding, and that they would endeavor to help those with this condition.”

In other words, in this viewpoint, homosexuals are diseased, which explains why they feel “unnatural” attraction to members of the same sex, and they need help.

Brad used the word “deviant” straight out.

Other people should have been banned too. There are posters who started citing scripture. This is unacceptable behavior, and I am glad that Anthony closed that thread down.

Adam’s comments were not saying that all gay people should be hung, drawn and quartered.
his opinion is that being gay is unnatural and considers it to be an illness of some kind. This may not be accurate, but it is what he thinks.
If it is an unnatural thing to him, then that is up to him.

I think that banning him was over the top and shows more of your intolerance to opinions you do not agree with than anything else. And saying ‘my site, my rules’ is just not good enough.

If a comment made by anyone is reasonable and does not advocate the use of violence, either mental or physical. Then as far as I think, it has a place on a site like this where comment and debate are actively invited.

If someone does not agree, then they should post a reasoned out response that explains why you think they are wrong. One never knows, they just might be brought around to look at their opinion in a different way. Alternatively, ban’em for a week, that’ll teach them….

Sorry Anthony, you really dropped the ball here. If I was Adam E, I would never bother to come back.

I read the 239 comments regarding Gay Characters in Star Trek. I am a Gay American. It deeply saddens me regarding the majority of all of the comments. In Star Trek 6; the very apparently wise Klingon Chancellor leaned over to Kirk and said “I see we have a long way to go”, regarding the deep bigotry between some members of the Federation and Klingon Empire. I am glad you shut the thread down. At least I can have some hope there are “more than not” Star Trek fans out there that really understood what Star Trek 6 was about. Quite frankly it could have just as easily been a movie about many Men and Women, Blacks and Whites and Gay and Straight people. As long as there is Hatred, as I believe Star Trek 6 was trying to point out; there will never be a complete lack of bigotry.

I would most certainly enjoy hearing your take on how and why the fandom of Star Trek has used this site many times to berate each other, especially personally and not just regarding the Gay topic. These attacks disturb me.

First of all I would like to express my disappointment with the events that occurred last week. Anthony and the TrekMovie.com staff work diligently to provide the best Star Trek news website on the internet. Provided is a place on the internet where the Star Trek fan community can come together and share on of the things we all have in common, the appreciation of the Star Trek franchise.

Last week I posted a comment expressing my views in regard to the subject of homosexual characters in Star Trek. I explained what I would consider my optimistic view of what the future may hold. Needless to say many of my fellow Star Trek fans disagreed with what I wrote and some were offended. It was not my intention to offend anyone. I do believe that some of you read my statement wrong and did not correctly grasp what I was trying to convey. Even though I attempted to word my comment carefully the ideas I wished to express were not transmitted and/or received properly.

I would like to make it clear that I do not despise homosexuals. They, like all people, deserve love and compassion; any unjust discrimination should be avoided. It is not my intention to show any hostility toward anyone. I stand by my belief that any sexual act that is not open to the gift of life is contrary to the natural law and is unacceptable. I understand that some of you beliefs may differ from this.

Anthony, I really appreciate what you and your staff do here. I want you to know that I hold no hard feelings. I will continue visiting TrekMovie.com and recommending it to others. Although I’m not so sure the ban was completely necessary I respect the fact that this is your website. I am glad you shut down the thread because some of the comments were becoming quite hostile. You may even want to delete some comments.

Have to agree with Denise in the sense that it made me uncomfortable when I read the post she mentioned.

I’d love to kiss up to you but I’m not that kind of person. Don’t like trying to make people like me by fawning all over them. Besides, most of them are intelligent enough to realize that you’re just a sycophant (new word for me) if you do that.

I now like to compliment people to encourage them because I used to be the most negative, insulting person on earth and am relieved that I’ve changed.

All this to say, I know this site is not for toddlers but don’t you think that being too permissive can really encourage some nasty stuff? If people see some things they say aren’t deleted, it may encourage them to push to envelope at our expense.

Yes, I know that some people out there swear. When I was younger I used to be one of the most offensive people on the planet. Now, that language grieves me. Just like when I used to smoke, having other smokers around me didn’t bother me. Now that I’ve quit, second-hand smoke makes me absolutely nauseous. Have no idea why. However, that doesn’t mean that I dislike smokers. Just don’t want to be around the smoke because it makes me feel ill.

As you roll your eyes, please consider that not everyone enjoys expletives. Maybe that makes us boring or priggish but the English language has a lot of words available so choosing the unpleasant ones is really not necessary.

I AM NOT JUDGING ANYONE WHO USES THESE WORDS. I used to be one of the worst offenders. It’s a free country so anyone can swear if they want to. I would just like to not see it everywhere I go, especially in a class act like this website.

do you know what happened to it? i can not find information anywhere and i am sorta bummed about the whole thing.

Just read the note about the BSG section.. and since BSG is the ONLY new-release sci-fi on Television right now worth a darn… it is certainly valid to include it… personally, since the Trek news is so thin, and obviously not going to come from Abrams and company, lets put our energy into something real, rather than discussing a bunch of maybes and conjecture…

Keep the BSG, or sci-fi sections please.. at least it’s something we can actually look forward to. Trek will end up being left in the dust.

Hey Tony,
I’m absolutely baffled why you deleted my post #19 from today’s BSG thread? I save all my posts. After rereading it several times, I can’t find anything offensive about it. I’m not hurt or anything, just baffled? What did I do wrong? I don’t see where my post differs that much from #10 Dennis Bailey, other than I fleshed out my idea more fully. I didn’t flame anyone or troll (whatever that really means). I just disagreed that Starbuck isn’t the worst Captain ever. People disagree with me all the time. And bashing Harriman is a regular occurrance when discussing Captains. I just mentioned his name. As I’ve posted before it’s about reveling in the debate. I assumed that you posted your comment about Starbuck to generate discourse. If your going to delete people who disagree with you, just say so. I won’t make that mistake again. I seek not to condemn, rather I ask only for guidance.

Dear Mr. Pascale,
Upon rereading my above post # 206, I realize I was excessively harsh to you. Please, accept my earnest apologies for that. And I truely hope our over the top exhortations on the Wil Wheaton thread does not preclude future guest bloggers. He certainly got things stirred up. I’m equally delighted that Mr. Orci laid my fears to rest. I think it’s obvious how devoted we all are to our beloved Trek, but I remain baffled by the divisive passions between the fans of Trek’s various incarnations.
Again, thank you for continuing to put up with our padantic rantings, and keep up the superb work.

Posts sometime just disappear or never seem to get added to threads. I’ve experience this myself. One or two may have been inappropriate and it’s Anthony’s prerogative as webmaster to remove them, but I’m made what I thought were constructive non-offensive comments that appear to post and then are gone when I go back. Stuff happen I guess.

On another topic, how about an update on Star Trek The Tour? - ah I see someone above mentioned this too. We haven’t any news on that in months….

The picture of a bloody shatner on the front page is really bothering/upsetting me. I hate that image and it just evokes unpleasant feelings. I politely and respectfully ask that it be changed.

Anthony, I know we folks on the chat tend to get a little out of hand from time to time and have to be reminded to play nice…but methinks there’s a troll named “Johnny Salami” over there lately who seems to be creating havoc quite nicely…is this the proper forum for expressing concerns like that? We’ve generally been fairly good at policing ourselves but tempers are beginning to flare.
