Reading Rainbow Kickstarter funding with Trek alumni

As we reported a couple of weeks ago LeVar Burton had started a Kickstarter fund to bring back beloved children’s show Reading Rainbow. It made their first goal of funding within a day, but the need for funding isn’t over, in an update this week Burton announced that he has enlisted Trek alumni to help him read stories, there will be exclusive Reading Rainbow Live! events for Kickstarter  pledges. Reading Rainbow Live! is a series of one-time-only events where I’m inviting you to bring your child and join us for a few hours. My friends and I will read from a few children’s books. We’ll all watch a classic episode of Reading Rainbow together, and everyone will go home with some special goodies. And afterward, there will also be a smaller Meet & Greet reception where a small number of families can join us to take photos, sign autographs and talk! The first performance will feature the “Men of Star Trek,” which include: Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, and Robert Picardo. The second performance is themed as the “Women of Star Trek,” with Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden, Jeri Ryan and Kate Mulgrew appearing. There are also two special solo performances planned, one with William Shatner and one with Patrick Stewart. All of the live readings will be Los Angeles, except for Patrick Stewart’s, which will be held in New York City. Read on for the full details.

Go Behind The Scenes of Star Trek Continues in New Documentary Series

The first two episodes of a new behind the scenes documentary take you onto the set of Star Trek Continues. Wired and Condé Nast Entertainment were on set for the filming of episode 3, “Fairest of Them All”. Producer Vic Mignogna takes you on a tour of what director James Kerwin calls “the fourth season of The Original Series”. The set designers, costume designers, makeup artists, editors, and everyone involved with the shooting have taken every step to ensure that the episodes of STC look and feel like something shot in the 1960’s, and the attention to detail is worthy of the nitpickiest of Trekkies (go ahead, do your worst in the comments). Look for episodes 3, 4, and 5 of the behind the scenes doc in weeks to come. Episode 1: CATCH VIC MIGNOGNA BEHIND THE SCENES IN THE SERIES STAR TREK CONTINUES

Fan Films: “Prelude to Axanar” Trailer Released

The team from Prelude to Axanar, a Trek fan film that raised over $100k on its Kickstarter just this March, has released its first teaser trailer. The film boasts an impressive cast and crew, including Richard Hatch, Michael Hogan, JG Hertzler, and Gary Graham (reprising his role as Vulcan ambassador Soval). The visual effects artist, Tobias Richter, really shows his chops in this nearly three minute trailer. The graphics and cinematography are impressive; can the full length film live up to the trailer? Check it out below and tell us what you think in the comments.

Sorry, Netflix & CBS Not in Talks To Produce New Show

A new story is making the rounds claiming that, while at Phoenix Comicon this past weekend,  author Larry Nemecek (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, Star Trek Stellar Cartography) revealed that Netflix and CBS are “in talks” regarding a new Star Trek series.  The story made a big splash, since it’s not so crazy to think that Netflix, who has hit it big with recent original shows Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, would look to Star Trek, one of its top performers in streaming TV, for a new series. In a blog post on his web site, Nemecek refutes the story: …this non-bylined writer known only as “Starfleet Intelligence” is too wrapped up in tossing around jazzy phrases of TheBizSpeak in this post, and has the situation blown up way too big —though it makes a nice screaming headline…it’s in Netflix’s interest to be casting about for new shows—including those from known franchises. I understand Star Trek is one of them—especially as Trek’s 737 hours of “reruns” performs as a top draw ON Netflix. As I understand it, there have been overtures.  But none taken. So far.
