Is Star Trek-like Time Travel/Alternative Universes The New Thing For Genre TV?

[Spoilers] Is it just me, or is Star Trek-like time travel the new thing for TV? Just a few years ago dealing with hard sci-fi topics was taboo in TV, but these days you can’t throw a rock in prime time, without it jumping into a parallel universe. The latest example came last night in FlashForward, a show co-created by TNG era vet Brannon Braga that also includes Star Trek’s John Cho in the cast.

Star Trek’s new Uhura, Zoe Saldana’s will next be seen (rendered in 3D CGI as the Na’vi princess Neytiri) in James Cameron’s new sci-fi epic Avatar. Reviews: Gene Roddenberry’s ‘Genesis II’ & ‘Planet Earth’

Last week Star Trek director JJ Abrams conducted a Q&A at a press event promoting the upcoming Star Trek DVD and Blu-ray releases. TrekMovie posted a partial transcript, which covered what JJ said, not related to the home video releases. Orci & Kurtzman On Star Trek Sequel, Fringe, Cowboys & Aliens & more + Pair Producing Hawaii Five-0 Reboot

In addition to JJ Abrams (see previous story), writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman were also on hand at the Paramount Home Video press day. More Trek and Fringe Talk From Leonard Nimoy

Tonight Leonard Nimoy returns to Fringe as William Bell in the episode "Momentum Deferred" (FOX: 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). Today FOX released a transcript with this week’s conference call with Nimoy, where he talks about the role and also his other JJ Abrams collaboration, Star Trek. John Cho: Star Trek Cast ‘Hell-Bent’ For Sequel

Last week ABC debuted their new sci-fi show FlashForward (co-created by Trek vet Brannon Braga), with Star Trek’s new Sulu John Cho on board as part of the ensemble cast. Cho is now promoting the show, but of course is also being asked about Star Trek. Cho comments on the status of the sequel and if he (or the other actors) will be able to juggle their busy schedules for the next Trek.
