More Fan Q&A With Roberto Orci

EXCLUSIVE: Last Friday director/producer J.J. Abrams and many of his cast and crew on new Star Trek film dropped by TrekMovie.com from the set of the film to take questions from the fans. However, after the dust settled, Star Trek co-writer and executive producer Roberto Orci kept the discussion going over the weekend answering more fan questions in the TrekMovie.com talkback. Giacchino Nominated For Oscar

Today Michael Giacchino, the composer of the JJ Abrams Star Trek, has been nominated for an Academy Award for his score of the Disney animated film Ratatouille. The composer has already picked up an Emmy, but this is his first Oscar nomination. He may be following in the footsteps of previous Trek composers Leonard Rosenman, James Horner and Jerry Goldsmith who all have won Oscars.



Another Trek Actor Discovered

TrekMovie.com has learned of another actor appearing in the new Star Trek film. Newcomer Jeffery Hauser was cast in the film in early October and his scenes were shot the following month. Hauser tells TrekMovie.com his is a small speaking role consisting of just few lines. Star Trek is the 23 year-old actor’s first big break in a feature film and it has turned him into a bit of a Trekkie.



More Trek Talk From Quinto

It’s been at least a couple weeks since we heard anything from Zachary Quinto, so let’s rectify that some excerpts from an interview (seemingly conducted before Star Trek film began filming) in the new issue of the official Heroes magazine. The actor discusses what drew him to the role of Spock, the negotiation and makeup process, his relationship with Leonard Nimoy and a hypothetical battle between Spock and Sylar.



Karl Urban Was Ready For Star Trek

Apparently playing Dr. McCoy in Star Trek isn’t just another high profile acting job for Karl Urban. In a new interview with IGN TV promoting his role in the CBS mini-series Comanche Moon, the actor also talked Trek. Urban said that he actively pursued the role and he didn’t need to review the old shows since he has been watching Star Trek since he was a kid. .


Set Designer Talks About New Enterprise

Since production on the new Star Trek film began, there have been several reports as to what the interior and exterior of the newly-designed USS Enterprise will look like. Now, comes more clues from someone who actually worked on the sets. Dawn Brown, one of the film’s set designers, tells SyFy Portal that fans should come to the movie prepared for a new look and hopes they will have an open mind. More below (some minor spoilers)

USA Cancels 2 Shows From Trek Vets

The USA Network has given the axe to two genre shows co-created by Star Trek veterans: The 4400 and The Dead Zone. The 4400 was created by Scott Peters and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine writer and producer Rene Echevarria. The Dead Zone was created for television by Deep Space Nine & Voyager co-creator Michael Piller with his son, Shawn Piller (who wrote for TNG and VOY). Both shows also featured a number of Trek vets both in front of and behind the camera.




3rd ‘Trek To The Troops’ Coming This Tuesday

Trek to the Troops, an organization that uses science fiction as a means to celebrate to the US Armed Forces, will be holding their 3rd Annual Meet-and-Greet on December 11th. Special guests at the event will include Tim Russ (VOY: Tuvok), Chase Masterson (DS9: Leeta), Natalija Nogulich (TNG: Adm. Nechayev) and Chris Doohan (son of James Doohan). Music will be performed by perennial Trek guest star Vaughn Armstrong’s Enterprise Blues Band. Organizers also promise “lovely models.” The event will be held at the Bob Hope Hollywood USO at LAX in Los Angeles, California from 1pm to about 8pm. Takei Talks Old and New Trek + Return To Heroes

Star Trek legend George Takei, who originated the role of Mr. Sulu, may have acquired new popularity with his role on Heroes but he’s still perfectly willing to talk Trek. In an interview with the UK’s Daily Record, Takei calls Trek “an amazing phenomenon,” despite the low ratings his show received during its original run. At the beginning of each episode we’d say we were on a five-year mission, but it wasn’t the Klingons we did battle with, it was the program executives at Paramount who aborted our five-year mission after just three.


Nero Gets A Henchman – Hemsworth Confirmed

Khan had Joachim, Shinzon had his Viceroy, Goldfinger had Odd Job, and now Nero has Ayel. Trekmovie.com earlier reported that two of the central characters still to be cast for the new Star Trek movie were henchmen of the villain Nero, played by Eric Bana. Tonight Variety reports that Emmy-nominee Clifton Collins, Jr. has signed on to play Ayel, “the cohort and general to Nero.” Variety also confirmed the earlier story that 24-year-old Australian actor Chris Hemsworth will be playing Kirk’s father, George Kirk, Sr.


Abrams On Morrison: She Is Not Rand

Three days ago, it was reported that House star Jennifer Morrison has a role in the new Star Trek movie. Today, J.J. Abrams himself told TV Guide “she is indeed in the movie, and she is most excellent!” There has been much speculation about who Morrison might be playing and Abrams still isn’t saying, but he did say the 28-year-old actress will not be playing Yeoman Janice Rand. In addition, Abrams again assures us that the script for Star Trek is “locked” and that the current writers’ strike will not affect production.

The biggest Trek news this week, of course, is that filming on the new film has begun. Well, that and the whole Winona Ryder thing. ‘Star Trek’ Extras Open Casting Call – Looking For ‘Unique Faces’

Lately the focus has been reporting on principal casting for the new Star Trek film, but what about the extras? TrekMovie.com has learned that Headquarters Casting, the agency handling extras for the new Star Trek feature, are currently looking to fill the backgrounds under the code name “Corporate Headquarters.” The agency will be holding an open casting call this weekend. They are now trying to find people with the right look to play Vulcans, Cadets as well as those with ‘unique facial features.’ More details below.
