In 2009 Anton Yelchin stepped into iconic roles in both the Star Trek and Terminator franchises, and now he is going to do it again, this time for the Smurfs. Sony has announced Anton Yelchin has joined the cast for their new hybrid live action/animated comedy The Smurfs.
A couple of Star Trek veterans are returning to the world of sci-fi. First up Star Trek The Next Generation’s Wil Wheaton has been cast to do an episode of Syfy’s Eureka. And Star Trek Voyager’s Robert Duncan McNeil is directing a new episode of the ABC alien show V. More details below.
Today in Star Trek future history is "First Contact Day". Regardless of your timeline, on April 5th, 2063 Dr. Zefram Cochrane is to became the first man to break the warp barrier (with a little help from the crew of the NCC-1701E), which will catch the notice of some passing Vulcans who initiate the ‘first contact’ between humans and aliens…and the beginnings of the United Federation of Planets and all that came with it.
Apples new iPad (or if you prefer iPADD) is the hot thing in tech right now. And IDW, the publisher of Star Trek comics, has just announced they will be taking advantage of the device Steve Jobs calls ‘magical’. Leonard Nimoy has recently spoke about his retirement from acting, but it appears he did find time to fit in some voice work for a Transformers video game. Nimoy, who also recently provided voice work for Star Trek Online, will be featured in the upcoming Activision game "Transformers: War for Cybertron". UPDATE: Apparently this is a rumor and has been denied by Activision.

Recently Star Trek and Heroe’s star Zachary Quinto has said that he wants to expand out of the sci-fi genre and it looks like one way he might do that is a supporting role in an R-Rated romantic comedy. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Quinto has been offered a role in the Anna Faris comedy What’s Your Number. Details below.

John Jefferies, a designer for the original Star Trek, passed away on March 25th, from complications from lung cancer. John worked with his brother and the art director for Star Trek, the late Matt Jefferies. John was 74. More information and tributes to Jefferies below.
Paramount has already announced that their next Star Trek movie will be released June 29, 2012, which is exactly 27 months away. So when will the film begin shooting? Simon Pegg says it could be as soon as late 2010, but according to sources, that may be a bit of an early estimate. Details below. Plus more on Simon Pegg’s meeting with Patrick Stewart.
George Takei seems to be having a big week. Not only is he all over TV these days with a new Sharp TV commercial, but he has been cast in a new Tom Hanks comedy. Hanks revealed the cast of his upcoming film Larry Crowne using a mysterious Twitter picture showing the headshots of his cast. Plus we have more Takei news with a new video about the Census.
In the 2009 Star Trek movie both Kirk and Spock had love interests (or at least bed interest for Kirk). And it appears that Simon Pegg is a bit jealous. In a red carpet interview at the Empire Awards the actor revealed that he wants Scotty to get some action in the next Star Trek movie.
Tonight the Jameson Empire Film Awards were held in London. Star Trek went in to the event nominated for three awards and walked away the winner of Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film. Simon Pegg, Star Trek’s new Scotty, was on hand to accept the award. Zoe Saldana also won Best Actress for Avatar and TNG’s Patrick Stewart was on hand to present an award. Details and photos below. Star Trek’s Zoe Saldana was nominated for two awards (for her work in Avatar) at the 23rd Annual Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards, held tonight in Los Angeles. In the end Zoe came away without any awards, but she was on hand to present. Saldana also talked about racial discrimination it a new cover story interview. Details, photos and video below.
Star Trek author Christopher L. Bennett ("Ex Machina", "Over a Torrent Sea") has announced that he is writing about book about the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations, introduced in the Deep Space Nine "Trials and Tribble-ations". The novel is expected to be released by Pocket Books in 2011. Details on that along with some more Trek book updates below.
