Damon Lindelof is currently writing the Star Trek sequel with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Over the weekend he was nabbed on the red carpet at the Creative Arts Emmys where he talked about the team’s goals for the Trek follow-up and again drew comparison’s to that other big recent franchise follow-up, The Dark Knight.

The Creation Star Trek Con started off on Thursday with TOS stars George Takei and Walter Koenig, both of whom talked about the latest Trek film and more. TNG’s John deLancie talked about the nature of Q, Janeway v Picard, and a possible Q appearance in the Star Trek sequel. There were also appearances by a number of TOS guest stars. Leonard Nimoy may be out of the game, but his friend William Shatner has made it clear in the last few years that he is interested in another go at being Captain Kirk. New comments from Shatner reconfirm his interest in the role, and the tech used to de-age Jeff Bridges for Tron Legacy has the original Kirk intrigued.
Star Trek scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are currently in production on their sci-fi western Cowboys and Aliens, which is shooting out in the New Mexico. Looks like Damon Lindelof is going to leverage his Star Trek prequeling to another sci-fi franchise. Star Trek producer and Lost writer/executive producer Damon Lindelof has reportedly closed a deal with 20th Century Fox to do some rewrite work on Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel. Lindelof may also have nabbed a new original sci-fi project for the studio.
Of all the new Star Trek crew members, Karl Urban is probably the biggest Trekkie and at brief Comic Con interview he says that he doesn’t know what is next for his Dr. McCoy in the sequel set to shoot a year from now, but he has faith in the geniuses behind the movie to take it further. Zachary Quinto (complete with his new buzz cut) is another Star Trek actor at Comic Con this year – promoting his new comic books. MTV caught up with the actor and he talked about how he is looking forward to the film and his faith in the team. Another voice has weighed in on the issue of Khan in the Star Trek sequel, and it is the same voice that made the "Khaaaaaaaaaaaaan!" yell immortal in Star Trek II. At Comic Con William Shatner was asked if he thought that JJ Abrams and team should bring Khan back for the sequel. It turns out Bill has an opinion on that. Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci are at Comic Con today doing a panel on their new Hawaii 5-0 series, but they took time out for a couple of interviews with to give a progress update on the Star Trek sequel. They didn’t drop any spoilers, but did talk about how the second film allows them to broaden the focus to the whole crew. They also implied we would see Pike back and more McCoy. Orci also said they "will listen" to fan input on if Khan should be in the film.
Today there was a Geek Summit of sorts with an Entertainment Weekly hosted panel with Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams at San Diego Comic Con. Unfortunately there was no discussion of the Star Trek sequel, but there was news from Whedon on The Avengers, and Abrams confirmed the start date for Super-8 and also said some interesting things about 3-D. On thing that seems to be a consensus with fans is that they want to see more of Karl Urban’s McCoy in the Star Trek sequel, currently being written. In a new interview promoting his upcoming film RED, Urban talked about his thoughts on the Star Trek sequel, and also if he would consider doing more than just three Star Trek films. Excerpts below.
Last week Star Trek co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman told us they (and Damon Lindelof) were just starting to break the story for the sequel due June 29th, 2012. At the same event, TrekMovie also spoke to producer Bryan Burk, one of the other members of Star Trek’s five-member "Supreme Court", who gave an update on the plans for the production, and also talked about how the team want the sequel to be even bigger than the first.
