On May 8, 2009 the future of the final frontier began again with the release of JJ Abrams Star Trek. One year later the film is still fresh in the minds of Trekkies while we await news (and the release) of the sequel the film inspired. There is a new Star Trek fan production that has just released their first episode and it is pretty impressive. Star Trek Phoenix, produced by the Seattle-based Temporal Studios, is a new take on the 25th century of Trek’s prime universe, set aboard a massive new ship: the USS Phoenix. More details below.
The popular fan series Star Trek: Phase II is planning on releasing three episodes in 2010, with the first premiering next weekend at FedCon (and online later in May). A rare film from one of the first Star Trek conventions is now online. Shot at the Star Trek Chicago 75, a con which had the first public reunion of the entire original Star Trek series crew since the show was cancelled in 1969. Check it out below.

Star Trek’s Spock Prime, Leonard Nimoy, is helping promote the new Star Trek Online game (in which he does some voice work — see previous article). As part of their series of screenings for WGA nominees, there was a showing of the 2009 Star Trek movie at the WGA theater in Beverly Hills on Wednesday night. Following the film there was a panel discussion and Q&A with the writers (and WGA nominees) Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The pair covered a lot of old ground, but also discussed some of the hot point topics on the first Star Trek, and they also talked about the sequel too. JJ Abrams Star Trek movie is now out on DVD and Blu-ray. One of the better special features is on Casting, which goes over how each of the iconic Star Trek crew members were recast. Most fans can remember that one of the biggest debates around JJ Abrams Star Trek movie was about if it would (or should) include William Shatner. The film makers spoke of how they tried to find a way, but in the end felt it wouldn’t work. However, JJ Abrams revealed that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman did write a scene for Shatner, and today we have that scene for you to read.

The Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas came to an end on Sunday, with the biggest stars of the original Kirk and Spock (William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy. plus the new new Spocks (Zachary Quinto and Jacob Kogan). In what is becoming a new tradition for the annual Star Trek Las Vegas Convention, Manny Coto and Brannon Braga held a well-attended panel in the main ballroom to talk to the fans about their time as writers and producers on Star Trek, with a focus on Star Trek Enterprise, but also some discussion of the new movie, and their current series.
