In the last week two new TV commercials have started airing in the US, and one in Germany, all of which are now available online. At this point most of what you see in commercials is from the theatrical trailers or previous TV spots, but there are some snippets of new stuff. Not all the toy news is about new movie related stuff, Diamond Select Toys is still announcing new items from the rest of the 40 years of Star Trek franchise (especially TOS). It has been over four years since the last Star Trek Voyager novel set after the events of the series finale. This week, the Library Computer takes a look at Kirsten Beyer’s new “Voyager: Full Circle”. A 576 page brick, this novel is making up for a lot of lost time to truly take us ‘full circle’ to bring Voyager into alignment with the other TNG-era books. The topic of this ‘Trek4Kids’ entry is how Paramount is marketing their new Star Trek movie to kids, something pretty important if they want to create a ‘next generation’ of fans. I am already a fan and was already excited about the movie, so I invited some of my sixth grade friends over to view some of the trailers and merchandise and also did a little survey at school, all to find out if other kids are getting excited too.
Watchmen continues to dominate in theaters and in genre news this week, but we also have updates on the upcoming films in the Terminator, Tron, Tranformers (and even Mad Max) Franchises. A pair of new articles at SciFi Wire have comments from Star Trek director JJ Abrams and the new James T. Kirk, Chris Pine. In the excerpts below Abrams talks about how this film showsTrek’s backstory, but you don’t need to know it to see it. And Pine talks about the arc that Kirk takes in the film.
"Star Trek: Countdown" is the official prequel comic for the new Star Trek movie, with two issues of the four issue series released so far. Countdown writers Mike Johnson and Tim Jones talked about the series at a panel at Wondercon over the weekend. CBS has hooked up with GoAnimate.com, a site with the motto ‘anyone can animate,’ to give fans the ability to create their own Star Trek animated stories, based on the classic Original Series. Fans of Star Trek novels have a lot of variety to look forward to in 2009. Pocket Books has scheduled books from all five TV series as well as some of the novel-only series. TrekMovie, with the help of Pocket’s Trek editor Margaret Clark, has put together an overview of the upcoming year with exclusive new details, new covers, and and even a sketch of the USS Aventine. We even have some hints of what to expect in 2010.
This morning Paramount Pictures released their ‘2009 Press Preview Kit.’ It includes brief overviews and some images for each of their 16 feature films slated for 2009. For Star Trek none of info was new and the four images were all previously released, however they were in super high resolution (including the image of the new USS Enterprise). Check them out below
The Star Trek big book event of 2008 has been the "Star Trek Destiny" crossover trilogy from David Mack, which has shaken things up in the Star Trek universe. The Star Trek trailer hit the Trek world by storm this week, including the contributors to TrekMovie.com. Last night JJ Abrams finally brought his World Tour to Los Angeles, for a screening of four scenes from his Star Trek movie at the Paramount Theater on the Paramount lot.
