UPDATED: No Wins for Star Trek at WGA and MPSE Awards

[UPDATED] The 2009 Star Trek movie was up for honors at two different guild award shows being held tonight. First up was the WGA Awards, where Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman unfortunately failed to win for their Star Trek script. And it was the same story at the the MPSE Golden Reel Awards were Star Trek sound editors lost out in three categories. Full details below.

ILM’s visual effects on the 2009 Star Trek movie has garnered BAFTA, Visual Effects Society and Oscar nominations. Star Trek Lands JJ Abrams On Vanity Fair List of Hollywood’s Top Moneymakers

JJ Abrams may or may not have been ‘snubbed’ by the Academy for his work on the 2009 Star Trek movie, but one thing is for sure, the man was paid. According to a new report in Vanity Fair, the producer/director is now on Hollywood’s Top 10 list of moneymakers for his ‘back end’ profits from Star Trek.      


JJ Abrams & Tom Cruise Set for Mission Impossible IV – coming Summer of 2011

There has been an update on progress on that other big Paramount franchise JJ Abrams is working on. Paramount has announced that the Abrams-produced Mission Impossible IV will go into production this summer and Tom Cruise will be back as both producer and star. The goal is for the film to be out by the summer of 2011. Details below.

It has been a busy week for Star Trek writer/exec producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Firstly Alex talked about Star Trek over the weekend at a film festival. Plus last week they signed a new big TV deal with Fox, and today they cast an actor from Lost (and Trek) for their Hawaii Five-0 remake. Movie Fan Polling On Star Trek Academy Best Pic Omission – But Orci Says ‘No Snub’

Not long after yesterday’s nominations for the Academy Awards were announced, many in the media started calling the omission of a Best Picture nod for Star Trek a ‘snub’ or a ‘surprise’ (see previous report). Now a couple of polls show many movie fans agree. However, Star Trek exec producer and co-writer Roberto Orci doesn’t agree.

After the WGA Star Trek screening and panel earlier in the week (see previous report), Roberto Orci spent a little time doing a video interview for TrekMovie. The writer talked about meeting Walter Koenig, gave an update on the status of the sequel, explained why writing it feels harder than the first, and also revealed how fan interaction at TrekMovie has worked its way into meetings with the Star Trek Supreme Court.

As part of their series of screenings for WGA nominees, there was a showing of the 2009 Star Trek movie at the WGA theater in Beverly Hills on Wednesday night. Following the film there was a panel discussion and Q&A with the writers (and WGA nominees) Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The pair covered a lot of old ground, but also discussed some of the hot point topics on the first Star Trek, and they also talked about the sequel too. Star Trek Sequel: JJ Abrams (Jokes): We Are Going Gorn! + Lindelof Says Scripting Starts in April

We have a couple of Star Trek sequel updates. While attending the National Board of Review Awards in New York earlier this week, producer JJ Abrams talked a bit about the next Trek, but then started joking about the Gorn. And in a separete interview co-writer Damon Lindelof said that work on the script will begin in April.

Today is a big day for scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, as they have just picked up their first WGA film screenplay nomination for their Star Trek screenplay. JJ Abrams To Direct Pilot For His NBC Spy Show ‘Undercovers’

We are still months away from knowing whether or not JJ Abrams will be directing the 2012 Star Trek sequel, but today it was announced he is going back into the director’s chair for the pilot of his new spy show for NBC, Undercovers. The new JJ Abrams executive produced show will be one of the new dramas to fill out the NBC schedule, now that their 10PM Jay Leno has been cancelled.

Shatner: Star Trek Movie “Wonderful” + Talks Star Trek Sequel

Last night Bill Shatner was on Jimmy Kimmel Live, promoting his show Raw Nerve, but things swung around to discussion of Star Trek. Bill said he thought the Star Trek movie was "wonderful", implying he finally saw it, and revealed he and JJ Abrams recently had lunch. However, he said he didn’t know if he would be in the sequel.
