There are many lessons that can be learned from Star Trek. This has now been recognized by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs who have gone to the final frontier to get out a message about how to avoid the flu.
The venerable UK sci-fi magazine SFX is celebrating their 200th issue with a countdown of the top 200 sci-fi and fantasy characters based on polling from the magazine readers. They have released Top 20 polls in a number of categories, with Star Trek’s Mr. Spock coming out on top in the Favorite Alien list, but Captain Kirk is only 12th in the favorite hero list? One of the highlights of big Vegas Star Trek Convention over the weekend is the opportunity to see the great costumes fans have been working on all year. Some of them are humorous, some of them are technically challenging, but all of them are fantastic. This year’s contest, which favors high-skill, home made costumes, once again showcased hundreds of great fan-made costumes. Highlights of the event are below.
In 2010 there has been a wave attempts to set new World Records for the most costumed Star Trek fans in one place. The record had moved all the way up to 507 leading into today’s attempt at the Creation Star Trek convention in Las Vegas. And now there is a new record. Details and photos from the event below.
On Sunday there is going to be a live Star Trek auction at the Star Trek convention (you can also participate online). The original Star Trek memorabilia comes from the collections of a number of Star Trek vets, plus there are a number of pieces from Star Trek: The Experience. At a Television Critics Association event today, the FX cable channel announced they had ordered a pilot for a comedy series that sounds like a parody of Star Trek. The new show called "Alabama" will be set on a starship in the future and comes from the team behind Reno 911. More details below.
There is more and more evidence that there is some kind of Klingon invasion going on. Recently a Klingon warning was found in Scotland, and last week the Klingons took over a San Diego Trolley station. Is the Klingon invasion real? A few days ago we reported that a sculpture on a mountain bike trail in Scotland warned of the Empire taking over Earth. And yesterday the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System claimed that they have "met the demands" of a Klingon invasion force and replaced all the signage at one of their trolley stations for signs in Klingon. The second of this summer’s three big Star Trek auctions happened Sunday. The Julien’s auction was different in that it had fewer actual props and costumes and was mostly the Gene and Majel Roddenberry estate sale, along with a number of items from William Shatner. Overall, the auctions was a success for collectors because of reasonable prices, including the few 2009 Star Trek movie items.

Over the weekend the annual Pedalpalooza was held in Portland, Oregon. The four day festival celebrating cycling included a number of events and rides, including a "Star Trek vs Star Trek" ride on Saturday.
