Entertainment Weekly Picks ‘Top 100 Characters of Last 20 Years’ – No Star Trek Names On The List

To celebrate their 20th anniversary, the new issue of Entertainment Weekly (on newsstands now) counts down what they are calling the "100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years". While the list include a number of well known sci-fi characters, not a single character from the Star Trek franchise made the list.


Star Trek Live Touring Schedule Released – To Visit 24 Cities In North America

As reported before, on May 31st the interactive educational "Star Trek Live" stage show premieres at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and will run through the summer. Today CBS has announced dates for the touring version of the show which kicks off June 11th in San Diego and then goes to over 20 cities around North America during the summer and fall. D.C. Fontana To Judge Star Trek Fan Fiction Contest

Star Trek Fan fiction has been around since the first Star Trek series began in the 60’s, and now aspiring authors have an opportunity to have their stories critiqued by one of the original writers for Star Trek, Dorothy ‘D.C.’ Fontana. The ‘Starfleet’ Star Trek fan club has announced their second creative writing contest will be judged by Fontana, details below.


VIDEO: Big Bang Theory Star Trek Refs From This Week and Next Week

The geeky CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory is rife with comic book and sci-fi references, but this week and last week’s episodes show that Star Trek is the closest to their hearts. In this week’s episode Sheldon revealed just how important Trek is to him in a potential crisis, and in next week’s episode, a flashback will show how Sheldon used Star Trek as a key test for his roommate Leonard. CBS Relaunching StarTrek.com This Summer — Site To Showcase TrekMovie.com

Since late 2007 www.startrek.com, the official site for the Star Trek franchise, has been mostly dormant. But that is about to change. This summer CBS is relaunching the site with a new look and new features. The new site will also showcase fan sites, including TrekMovie.com. More details below.


Trekkies in Germany and Tampa Beat Star Trek Costumed Fans Record

On May 1 Trekkies on two continents set out to break the world record for a gathering of fans in Star Trek costumes. The gatherings in Tampa, Florida and Bonn, Germany both succeeded in beating the record set in London earlier this year. But it was the group at the FedCon XIX Convention that wound up with what (pending certification) will be the new world record.  


CBS Experimenting With Converting Star Trek TV Series To 3-D – Moonves Not Convinced There Is A Market

The next big thing for television technology is supposed to be 3-D TV. So far content is scarce as studios and broadcasters are just starting to plan out their 3-D TV strategies. And in the case of CBS it appears that part of their testing of the technology has been with classic Star Trek, but the head of CBS isn’t too impressed.  


June Star Trek Charity Auction – Contains Lots From Roddenberry Estate, William Shatner & 2009 Star Trek Movie

In June Julien’s Auctions will be holding an auction of items from the estate of Gene and Majel Roddenberry, from William Shatner and from JJ Abrams & Paramount. The lots, on auction to benefit charity, will range from personal items from Roddenberry’s office, to costumes from the 2009 Star Trek movie, to William Shatner’s motorcycle.    



Canadian Vulcans Honor Leonard Nimoy: Photos, Video & Reports Roundup

This afternoon Leonard Nimoy “came home” to to the town of Vulcan, Alberta, Canada, where they held a parade for their adopted favorite son, gave him the key to the city, and unveiled a bust of the actor as Spock. FedCon XIX Preview: DS9 Stars + Phase II Screenings + Trek Costume Record Attempt + more

From April 30th to May 2nd Europe’s biggest Star Trek and Sci-Fi convention will take place in Bonn, Germany. Around 5,000 fans will meet over 20 guests, including Trek stars Michael Dorn, Terry Farrell, and Nicole de Boer. There will also be another attempt to break the Star Trek fans in costume record (on the same day as the attempt at Vulcan Con in FL). Details below.

Tampa Trekkies To Attempt To Break Star Trek Costumed Fans Record

In February a promotional event in London for the European roll-out of Star Trek Online set a Guinness World Record for the “largest gathering of people dressed as Star Trek characters”. However, with only 99 costumed Trekkies, the record was begging to be broken. And that is exactly what will be attempted on Saturday May 1st in Tampa, FL. Details below.


New ‘LCARS’ iPad Application Released

If you want your new Apple iPad to really feel like a Star Trek PADD, you are going to need a Star Trek style LCARS interface. Earlier this week we reported that the much talked about "Captain’s Log" iPad application was pulled from Apple’s iTunes. Now this weekend a new Star Trek-ish application has been released called the "LCARS Internet Media Reader". Check it out below.




Happy First Contact Day

Today in Star Trek future history is "First Contact Day". Regardless of your timeline, on April 5th, 2063 Dr. Zefram Cochrane is to became the first man to break the warp barrier (with a little help from the crew of the NCC-1701E), which will catch the notice of some passing Vulcans who initiate the ‘first contact’ between humans and aliens…and the beginnings of the United Federation of Planets and all that came with it.




Vulcan Named Official Star Trek Capital of Canada

The small town of Vulcan, Alberta, Canada has been capitalizing on it’s Trek-ish name for the last couple of decades, and now they have made it official. Vulcan has now been deemed the ‘Official Star Trek Capital of Canada.’ The town is planning a number of events to celebrate, including a visit from Leonard Nimoy. All the details below.




Star Trek Provides One Of The ‘HollyWords’ of 2009

Each year the Glo Global Language Monitor releases their list of the most influence "HollyWords", or words from Hollywood that most influenced the English Language in the past year. Topping this list this year was "Pandora" from Avatar, but there is also a contribution from Star Trek on the list this year, with "Her" coming in at #8, see below for details and explanation.
