The only Star Trek TV captain not appearing at this week’s Star Trek con in Las Vegas is Patrick Stewart. And now we know why. It appears that Mr. Stewart is too busy in London making big money as an Olympics tickets scalper (or touter as they say across the pond). With the release of the Star Trek sequel only nine months away, fans are anxiously looking for any hints about the direction of the film’s story and characters. While the J.J. Abrams wall of secrecy has remained largely impenetrable, some hints at what is planned may have been revealed in a recent interview with the writer of the Star Trek ongoing comics.
Replica maker QMx is venturing into are of cool Star Trek prints and also moving into creating items for the original series, with their announcement of a series of prints themed around TOS episodes. They have announced a new series of episode posters for TOS, revealing the first four to be released. Eventually they will release posters for all the episodes. More details below.
Once again NASA looks to Star Trek to help tell their story. Today the space agency released two versions of a video about the Curiosity Rover (aka Mars Science Laboratory) which is scheduled to touch down on the surface of Mars next week. And to satisfy fans of different generations one version of the video is narrated by original Star Trek star William Shatner and the other has Next Generation’s Wil Wheaton. Watch both below.
For the second weekend in a row The Dark Knight Rises is the top movie at the box office. In just ten days the film has taken in over half a billion dollars worldwide. This film cements Tom Hardy, who plays the villain Bane, as an even bigger star. But, it was just 10 years ago that Hardy got his big break in Star Trek: Nemesis. A JJ Abrams project that had seemed dormant is now getting more active. A new report says that the Star Trek producer/director is moving ahead on a reboot of Universal’s 1974 disaster movie Earthquke. Abrams has now hired a writer for project. More details below.
Earlier this week in our review of the Star Trek: The Next Generation theater events we also reported that TNG actor LeVar Burton surprised fans at the Times Square theater screening in New York. Video of Burton’s Q&A with the fans. Burton also tried to clarify that an image from the set that has gone viral is not him.
Bruce Greenwood is returning to the role of Admiral Christopher Pike for the 2013 Star Trek sequel. The actor was at the Saturn Awards last night and tried to stay within the confines of the film’s secrecy but did say some thigns about sets, the mood on the set and more. Both were asked about the new JJ Abrams Star Trek films and (of course) both said they would love to be part of the new feature films. Sirits also took issue with one element of the 2009 movie. Star Trek is stepping up to the plate in LA for "Star Trek Night" at Dodger Stadium on August 3rd. As part of the promotion of Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray, fans will be able to get a special collector’s shirt and see a fireworks show set to Star Trek music.

IDW has released previews for their Star Trek comics coming in October and it is going to be a busy month with four different books (not including variant covers). Star Trek Online, the free-to-play MMO, has launched its season 6 update. Titled "Under Seige" this new update adds many new features for player fleets, including ability to build your own Starbases. This fall Star Trek director/producer (and co-creator of Lost and Fringe) JJ Abrams has another mysterious TV show headed to NBC, Revolution. The new series is set in a post-apocalypse world where all technology has stopped working. Colbert and Stewart are Trekking again. Over the last couple of nights both of Comedy Central’s late night shows have thrown out Star Trek references. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart seems to have Wrath of Khan on their mind, while the Colbert Report sees the president as a Vulcan. Watch the clips below (if you live in the USA).
